Donald E. Overholtzer, Jr. passed away in his home on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 after a short battle with cancer.
Don was born Sept 8, 1946 in Kansas City, MO to Donald and Ethel (Cain) Overholtzer, Sr.
He proudly served his country by joining the Airforce at the age of 17.  As part of his service, he completed a tour in Vietnam.  His comment to this was "A lot of people said Vietnam was a wasted war, but there were plenty of children in Vietnam that didn't deserve what was going on."
He moved to his current home in rural Russell, Iowa after marrying his wife, Jana in 2004.  Together they enjoyed traveling and spending time in their quiet country home.  Don retired from the VA Medical Center in Des Moines in 2008.
He will be remembered by those who knew him for loving to pull practical jokes and his true loyalty to friends and family.  Don could always be counted on for a warm smile and comforting words.
He loved his Kansas City Chiefs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and he loved to fish.
Don was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Jana; daughter Dawn (Nick) Lefler of Ankeny; step-children Dusty Richard of Des Moines, and Jessica Richard of Russell.  Grandchildren Spencer Reed of Iowa City, Trent Richard of Clive; Lucas Richard of Russell, Aaliyah Richard of Chariton, Kinnick Ensley of Des Moines, Sisters, Rita (Dennis) Hesseltine of Adel and Gloria Bender of Texas.  Brother-in-law Dennis (Marilyn) Masters of Nashville, TN; Sister-in-law Valerie (David) Dunn of Oklahoma City, OK; Dee (Brian) Snodgrass of Knoxville, Iowa; Father-in-law Rodney (Marilyn) Masters of Chariton, Iowa.

Eleaine E. McCullough Obituary

Eleaine E. McCullough, 81, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Russell, Iowa passed away July 22, 2013 at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Eleaine Evelyn Johnson, born March 8, 1932, in Leon, Iowa was the daughter of George Johnson and Nellie B. Gatton Johnson.  After graduating from Leon High School, Eleaine married Ivan Gail McCullough of Garden Grove, May 25, 1950.  They were the parents of eight children: Arnan Gail, Allan Lynn, Calvin Lee, Jennine Kay, Kevin Guy, Galen Lyle, Maureen Rose and Coleen Lois.
Ivan and Eleaine moved to Russell, Iowa in 1954, where Ivan had employment.
In 1964, they purchased the insurance agency from Walter and Mona Coop and together they operated McCullough Insurance Agency until it was sold in 1985.  Ivan and Eleaine were divorced in 1988.
Along with being a licensed insurance agent, Eleaine also operated a bookkeeping and tax service from the office and continued a bookkeeping service in her home after the insurance business was sold.
Eleaine was assistant city clerk for Russell for a number of years.  She also worked more than 16 years as a bookkeeper for C&C Custom Cycle of Russell.  After already retiring three times, she began working again as the Lucas City Clerk for two years.  And then she provided home health care for Dale and Katie Relph for more than four years.  
Eleaine was married to Phillip Shenefield in 1988, and moved to the Shenefield farm.  Then divorced, she moved back to Russell in 1996, where she was able to buy her own home and live where she was happy and content.  She changed her name back to McCullough following her divorce.
Eleaine was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Oskaloosa.
She was involved as a volunteer for many years with the Girl Scouts, her church and the American Cancer Society, as well as school activities for the entire 26 years her children attended Russell Community School, she rarely missed any activities her children were involved in.
She enjoyed writing the Russell News Column for the Chariton Newspapers for a number of years.  Usually each column included personal writing on many different subjects.  She was hired in 1999 by the Chariton Newspapers as editor, a full-time job she continued for five years.  Following retirement from the newspaper, she continued to freelance for the newspaper until July 31, 2007.
Eleaine was an avid reader, enjoyed picture and word puzzles, playing the organ and sewing.
She had many large flower gardens with hundreds of different flowers, trees, and shrubs filling about an acre of space.  She was happiest working outside with the flowers and most days made a circle around the house and yard to enjoy whatever flowers were blooming at that time.
She was a collector  Her house was filled with angels, butterflies and books that lined the walls.  She also put together many scrapbooks - filled with an assortment of items which interested her.
Eleaine made her home with her daughter Coleen and Steve in Oskaloosa, Iowa moving with them in 2009.  The three of them created a happy home with much conversation and laughter.  They created a beautiful garden at this home, where like in Russell, Eleaine, when she was able, made daily trips circling the yard and garden.
Preceding her in death were her sons, Allan McCullough and Calvin McCullough; parents, George and Nellie Johnson, an infant brother, Eugene; a half-brother, Robert Adair and his wife, Dorothy; and two nephews Brian and Mark Adair and Mark's son.
Surviving are her children: Arnan McCullough of Wichita, KS; Jennine and Steve Rex of Enumclaw, WA; Kevin and Cindi McCullough of Russell; Galen and Pam McCullough of Chariton; Mo White of Chariton and Coleen McCullough and her husband Steve Coffey of Oskaloosa, IA.  Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren: Kimberly and Adam McCullough of Colorado; Morgan McCullough of Des Moines; Megan and Michael Arnold of Russell; Danielle, Michelle and Alissa McCullough of Hayden, ID; Dan Jacob of Oregon; Kurt and Toni McCullough of Chariton; Cody McCullough of Russell; Jeff and Emily McCullough of Chariton; Brett and Tori White of Chariton; four step-grandchildren; eight great grandchildren:  Graden, Cutler, Kyzer and Elsie Arnold of Russell; Alexander and Ian Jacob of Keokuk, IA; and Mila and Sophia McCullough of Chariton; four step-great-grandchildren; sister, Lanelle and Kenneth Herron of Chariton; and five nephews and their families.  She is also survived by Morgan and Megan's mother and dear friend, Denise and her husband, Pat Conway, and best friends, Marilyn and Butch Evans of Russell.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton with Rev. C.J. Latham of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ officiating.
As was her wish, her body has been cremated and private inurnment of her ashes will be held later.
Memorials may be made to the Chariton Public Library.

Caryl Henry Bond Obituary

Caryl H. Bond, 88, of Davenport passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at the Kahl Home. Funeral
services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, July 20, 2013 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will
be from 5-7 pm on Friday, July19 at the mortuary. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Bond was born August 25, 1924 in Russell, Iowa, the son of Guy and Mary (Hall) Bond. He
served in the U.S. Army Occupational Forces in Japan. On December 31, 1951 he married Norma Jones in Davenport. She preceded him in death on December 18, 2008.
He was a sixty-five year member of Laborer's International Union of North America, Local 309.
His hobbies included raising horses and home maintenance and construction.
Survivors include his children: Charles Bartel, Suzan Bartel, Karen Bartel, Joanne Bond-Troup, Jo Lynn Dumoulin, and Carlene Sarlette; fifteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and twelve great-great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Anna Loree Coulson Obituary

Anna Loree Coulson, age 87, of Polk City and formerly of Knoxville, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013, at the Polk City Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Polk City, Iowa. 
Anna was born at home in rural Russell, Iowa on October 25, 1925, the daughter of Harold Lee and Alta Rowena (Lynn) Horner. Anna was a graduate of the Russell High School. 
After graduation Anna worked for a short time for J. C. Penny’s and at the V.A. Hospital before she was united in marriage to William Dwayne “Bill” Coulson on September 2, 1951 in Lucas County, Iowa. Anna was a homemaker and the bookkeeper for the family business of A. L. Coulson Plumbing and Heating, until she and Bill retired in 1988. Anna and Bill shared over 56 years of marriage together and were blessed with four children: Carrol, Allen, Zina and Rowena. Bill died on July 31, 2008. 
Anna was a member of the Faith Baptist Church and a longtime member and the last surviving charter member of the Knoxville Regular Baptist Church. For over 20 years she was a Sunday School Teacher for two and three year olds. She also enjoyed Word Find Puzzles, Television and she especially enjoyed and loved her grandchildren. 
Anna is survived by her children: Carrol (Peggy) Coulson of Iowa Falls, Zina (Todd) Tigges of Dexter and Rowena (Nick) Kirk of Polk City; 13 grandchildren: Rachel (Jake) Willoughby, Joshua (Kristin) Coulson, Jacob Coulson, Heather (Justin) Riddle, Michele (Justin) Compton, Jason (Jennifer) Tigges, Phillip (Becky) Tigges, Courtney (Ben) Clausen, Chantal (John Tyler) Slayton, Kyle Moon, Noah Kirk, Clayton Kirk and Nathan Kirk; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Doris Clanin of Chariton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill; her son: Allen Coulson; one brother: Robert Horner; and one sister: Audrey Mains. 
Visitation for Anna will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Anna’s family will be present Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 2nd at the Faith Baptist Church of Knoxville with Pastor Curtis Gordon officiating. Burial will follow services at Greenwood Cemetery of rural Knoxville. 
A memorial has been established in Anna’s name to the Iowa Regular Baptist Camp. Condolences may be sent to www.winfieldfh.com. The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville is assisting Anna’s family with services.
