Betty Lewis Ehlert Obituary




 Betty Lewis Ehlert of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Monday, August 9, 2021. She was born May 25, 1930 to Clifford and Marie Lewis of Russell, Iowa and lived in the Russell area all of her childhood. On September 2, 1955, she was united in marriage to Lester C. Ehlert, of Des Moines. She worked for many years as Medical Office Manager for Dr. Albert Clemens, Surgeon, of Des Moines. Betty was a Certified Medical Assistant and a member of the American Association of Medical Assistants.


She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, serving on the Finance and Investment Committee. She had special interests in the Fine Arts and Stephens Ministry programs of St. John’s. Betty was ordained as an Elder in the St. John’s Lutheran Church on November 6, 2011 on All Saint’s Day. She was a member of the Salisbury House Board of Directors, was a longtime member of Des Moines Women’s Club, supportive member of the Des Moines Metro Opera and Des Moines Symphony. She was a member of the Des Moines Embassy Clubs.

Betty enjoyed traveling, especially to France and Europe after retiring, and spent time each winter on Sanibel Island, Florida. Her Des Moines friends often visited her there, enjoying the sun and seashells.

She was preceded in death by her father, her brother Richard Eugene Lewis, her stepfather Lyle J. Hardy, her mother and her husband Lester.

Her goddaughter Mallory Risbeck, who was very special to her, and cousins survive her as well as many friends.

Hamilton’s Funeral Home is assisting with cremation per Betty’s wishes, and there will be a burial of the urn at a later date.
