Dwight Marvin Thompson, 80, passed peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at Unity Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. He lived an amazing life full of family and friends.

Dwight was born May 14, 1940 in Russell, Iowa to Merwyn Lloyd and Leona Mable (Gilbert) Thompson. He graduated from Russell High School in 1958. He married Helen Teresa Dolinsek on June 16, 1963 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Iowa. To this union, three children - Michael, Brenda and Teresa - were born. Dwight and Helen lived all of their life in Chariton, Iowa.

Dwight retired from the Ford Garage and also worked many years at Goff and Nash Napa Auto Parts Store. He had a deep knowledge of automobiles and took pride in finding the right parts for his customers. He also worked for Fielding Funeral Home.

He was a leader and a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Chariton. He was a Charter Member of the Chariton Kiwanis Club, serving as president. He could be seen delivering beautiful poinsettias around the community each holiday season.

Dwight enjoyed his Allis-Chalmers antique tractor, driving his grandchildren around town, and in many holiday parades, and was a member of the Chariton Antique Tractor Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Merwyn and Leona Thompson, and his brother Burdette Thompson.

Dwight is survived by his wife Helen and their three children – Michael (Laura Mercier) of Oak Park, Illinois; Brenda (Jeff Nuckles) of Reidsville, North Carolina; and Teresa (Courtland Pfaff) of Urbandale, Iowa. He is also survived by his sister Lois Ann (George) Reynolds of Centerville, Iowa.

He was the proud Papa of eight granddaughters – Chelsea (Cory) Hatchel of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; Courtney Strzelecki of Mooresville, North Carolina; Mackenzie (Tyler Jacobsen) Quick of Atlanta, Georgia; Cecilia Thompson of St. Petersburg, Florida; Emma Thompson of Washington, DC; Olivia Quick of Urbandale, Iowa; Emily Quick of Urbandale, Iowa; and Jordan Nuckles of Reidsville, North Carolina. Dwight also had two great-granddaughters – Harper and Eden Hatchel of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. He also had many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 25 from 5-7 p.m. and funeral services will be held Sunday, July 26 at 2 p.m. Both will be held at the Fielding Funeral Home at 227 S. Grand in Chariton, Iowa.
