Elwyn Eugene Mason of Russell, Iowa, age 85, born October 2, 1929, went to be with his Heavenly Father on January 24, 2015. Elwyn was the son of Ustel and Tena (Schumann) Mason of Russell. He lived in rural Russell from birth to 1950 and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1948. Elwyn enlisted in the United States Air Force, September 14, 1950, during the Korean War and was honorably discharged Feb. 25, 1954; his rank was Staff Sergeant and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Occupation Medal Germany. During his service time he served at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, Furstenfeldbruck, Germany and Bitburg, Germany.
After his discharge he returned to Russell; in 1954 he moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he was employed by Solar Aircraft Corporation. In 1955, he was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Des Moines. In 1971, the family moved back to the Russell area and built a new home near his parents home. After working 33 years with Goodyear, he retired in 1988. He worked part time at the Russell Oil Company until 2004. He was known, in town, as the best pizza maker around, although he followed the same recipe as did others who worked there.
November 18, 1955, he married Betty Cain, of Van Wert, Iowa, in Des Moines and to this union, two sons were born; Philip in 1957 and Kenneth in 1960. The family became members of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church. Elwyn was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion Charlie Clark Post #308 and was a past member of the Russell Community Club.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Maxine (Mason) Moore of Russell; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wallace (Bud) and Margreet (Marge) Cain of Van Wert, Iowa; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, LuEtta and David Wakefield of Grand River, Iowa.
Elwyn is survived by his loving wife, Betty, Russell, IA; sons, Phil (Shelley) Mason of Diagnal, IA and Ken (Deb) Mason of Russell, IA. Grandchildren, Jaime (Brian) Sabel of Lincoln, NE, Becky (Daren) Jaques of West Des Moines, IA, Ryan Mason of Russell, IA, Robbie (Shayna) Mason of Diagonal, IA and Michael (Emily) Mason of Russell, IA; Great grandchildren, Wynter, Savannah, and Dallas Jaques of West Des Moines, IA, Kaydence and Ryker Mason of Diagonal, IA; Honorary great grandson, Thor Sorensen of Denmark; Nephew, Wallace (Jacqueline) Wakefield of Cibolo, TX, brother-in-law, Bill (Dolores) Moore of West Des Moines, IA; Aunt, Etta Shelton of Lancaster, OH; cousins and a host of friends.
