Karla Kay Buckalew went to be with Jesus on June 24, 2020. Karla was born in Chariton, Iowa on June 23, 1965 to Marvin and Jeannette (Cochran) Buckalew.

Karla graduated from Drake University with her BS in Economics, History, Political Science and Sociology with a secondary education teaching endorsement.

Karla was a corporate trainer for Sears/Citi 1992 – 2010, Wells Fargo 2010-2014 and Farm Bureau 2014 on.

Karla enjoyed flowers, walking in the timber and looking at wild flowers, animals, reading, crafts, baking, making candy, needlework, the Republican party and politics, traveling and helping others.

Remaining to cherish her memory are her parents; Marvin and Jeannette, sister Karen (Dennis Kanakulya), nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, poodle Mr. Angus and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa State Fair for a plaque by the Farm Bureau exhibit “Growing our Future”.  She loved the State Fair and enjoyed being part of the Farm Bureau team.  Blue Ribbon Foundation IA State Fair

Andree Lee Zanders Obituary

Andree Lee Zanders, 74, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2020 at Mercy in Des Moines, Iowa.  Andree was born on May 17, 1946 to Lyle William and Barbara Jean (Kalbach) Zanders.  He attended and graduated from North Polk High School.  After graduation, Andree enlisted in the Navy.  He was in the Navy from January 1965 to January 1971.
On January 2, 1981, he was united in marriage to Carol Ann Anderson.  Andree has three children, son Chris Parrish, two daughters Lisa Fresh and Kelli Oakleaf.
Andree spent most of his life living in Russell Iowa.  He ran his own business and was still working just before he entered the hospital and passed away.
He had a lot of interest besides working to keep him busy.  There was fishing, hunting, gardening, golfing, board games, sci-fi movies, ginseng coffee, and his favorite thing was his grandkids.
Andree was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Barbara Zanders, grandson Thatcher Wayne Oakleaf.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Zanders, his son Chris Parrish of Chariton Iowa, daughters, Lisa (Ron) Fresh of Lorimor Iowa, Kelli (Mike) Oakleaf of Arizona, granddaughter Kelsey (Derrick) Lear of Afton Iowa, grandchildren Zandria, Winston, Ariana of Arizona, brother Gerald (Dolores) Zanders, nephew J.R. (Cristal) Zanders of Bellevue, Nebraska, niece Tara Zanders of Texas, great-grandchildren Shane, Tristin, Ellie, Kylie of Afton Iowa.
Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 27, 2020 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton Iowa.  Memorial can be directed to Lucas County Humane Society.  On line condolences may be left at www.fieldingfuneralhomes.com.

Geralda Darlene Wiig Obituary

 Services for Geralda Wiig, 89, will be Saturday, June 6, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends prior to the service, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Please plan to follow the social distancing rules and no more than 100 people may be in the building at one time. Interment will be at the Edgewood Cemetery in Edgewood, Iowa on Sunday June 7, 2020.

Geralda Darlene Halfhill was born December 28, 1930 to Fred and Amy (Beaman) Halfhill. Geralda was the third of nine children. Geralda attended first grade at Delhi School and her remaining school years at Buck Creek School. Geralda enjoyed sewing doll clothes at a young age, reading, and enjoyed playing basketball in high school.

After high school graduation, Geralda continued her education at the Iowa State Teacher College. Geralda received her teaching certificate and went on to teach both elementary and special education. She graduated from UNI August 1973. She taught in several school districts throughout her teaching career, including: Colesburg, Blairstown, Shellsburg, Center Point, and Russell.

Geralda was blessed with three children: Susan, Ronald, and Theodore. She was also the proud grandmother of eleven grandchildren and thirty-four great grandchildren!

Geralda was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Wiig in 1985. The couple started their life together in Russell before settling in Chariton. Geralda enjoyed tending to her flower gardens. She was very active in the Chariton community. Geralda was the president of the WWI Auxiliary committee, president of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a member of the Lucas County Retired Teachers Association, a Chariton Book Club member, a dedicated member of the First Lutheran Church, and a Charter Member of the Chariton Valley Piecemakers Quilt Guild. Geralda made and donated countless quilts to the Lutheran World Relief Ministries.

When Geralda wasn’t quilting, attending church, reading, or meeting with a group of friends, she was often spotted walking her beloved dog.

Geralda passed away May 26, 2020 at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred & Amy Halfhill; husband, Robert Wiig; granddaughter, Brenda Goben; and four siblings. Geralda is survived by her children: Susan (Paul) Goben, Ronald Hansen, and Theodore (Aurora) Hansen; grandchildren: Christopher Goben, Nicholas Goben, Tami Herrold, Fredrick Hansen, Justin Hansen, Brandi Myers, Joshua Hansen, Benjamin Hansen, Nicole Chuzie, and Vanessa Power; 34 great grandchildren; siblings: Robert Halfhill, Lyndall Weir, Wanda Gulick, and David Halfhill; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Mary Jane Schelker, age 61, of Albia, went to be with the Lord at her home under the care of EveryStep Hospice with her loving family by her side. She was born on May 17, 1959 to Dean and Helen (Dingman) Whitson.

Mary graduated from Russell High School, Class of 1977. Mary was united in marriage to Richard Schelker Jr. on March 25, 1983. Mary attended Indian Hills Community College and received her degree in radiology. She worked in medical services as a certified nursing assistant and physical therapist assistant. She then found her passion to be working as a home healthcare provider.

She was a member of the Albia Baptist Temple, where she enjoyed teaching bible school, summer camp, and spy guys. She enjoyed gardening at the community garden, spending time with family and friends, and especially loved being a grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Jr. of Albia; her children Stacey (Matt) Gillaspie of Albia, Ricky (Stacy) Schelker III of Des Moines, Stephany Schelker and Jerald Russell of Ankeny; grandchildren, Marcus A. Major, Shaine W-L Major, Tylar C. Major, Michaela A. Lloyd, Michael Gillaspie, Alexis Gillaspie, Wendy L. Laughridge, Reba R. Phinney, Richard E. Schelker IV, Isabella NN Schelker, Paisley JM Schelker, Emmy R. Van Rheenen, Ayla R. Wilkinson, Keagan R. Klinger, Jared D. Schelker, Summer A. Russell, Sebastian J. Russell, Christian L. David Gary Dean, 77, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on April 16, 2020. He passed because of complications due to a long battle with Lymphoma but will always be remembered for his fighting spirit. Dave loved life and always had a positive attitude. He enjoyed the devotion of his family and the respect and love of many friends and neighbors.

Dave was born on March 2nd, 1943 and raised on a farm in the Russell, Iowa area. Dave met and married Roena 57 years ago. They celebrated life together and raised their daughters in Norwalk, Iowa. Dave was a salesman for Zep Manufacturing and retired after 42 years.

Dave was a Mason, a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and the Royal Order of Jesters. Dave was a kind, faithful and generous man. He spent many years volunteering his time and talents in their Church, the Women’s Violence Shelter and the Shrine. Dave enjoyed many years raising horses, restoring hot rods, flying his plane and traveling the world with his wife. Their favorite destination was South Padre Island where they celebrated many sunsets with dear friends. Dave had an adventurous spirit and his family will remember moments spent together that included skydiving, spelunking, ziplining, driving his ATV in the mountains and hunting. Each moment together was considered a blessing.

Dave will be deeply missed by his loving wife Roena, children, Mindy (Will) Alitz and Becky (Dave) Fletcher; granddaughter Samantha (John) Finneseth, grandsons, Tyler Alitz, Vance (Courtney) Fletcher and Chase Fletcher; great grandchildren Eric and Olivia Finneseth and his nieces and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.

RONALD L. PROUGH

On February 15, 2020, Ronald L Prough passed away unexpectedly at work at the age of 74 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he had resided since 1974. Ronald worked at Abrahamson Bail Bonds for over 25 years, where he was an exemplary employee—hard working and dependable.
Ronald was born on May 20, 1945 in Chariton, Iowa to Harry Prough (“Junior”) and Ethel. Ronald spoke often of his fond memories with his Grandma Cottrell and Grandma Prough, and life on the farm as a child. These cherished memories carried throughout his life as he may have lived in the “city” but he was most definitely a “country boy” at heart. He adored his pets, the outdoors, flowers, and a simple way of life. He often wore his bib overalls, and always cowboy boots.
Ronald was drafted in October 1965 and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged from service in October 1967.
Ron was known for his kindness and grand generosity. He was meticulous, independent, introverted, and strong willed, yet extremely tender-hearted. He was a devoted friend and he loved very deeply those who were closest to him. His friends described him as the “brother they never had.” Ron adored his beloved dogs, and he valued his numerous vehicles. He enjoyed writing. He sent thousands of cards, letters and poems to those he held dear. He loved going to garage sales where he gathered collection upon collection of “treasures”.
In Ron’s own words found in his autobiography, “I have had a good and super blessed life. God has been so good to me, I give Him thanks and all the credit for so many blessings that have been bestowed upon me, for His meeting my needs over the years, for protection and guidance down this pathway of life. God had a reason for each person that has entered my life. I am especially thankful for my family, for the ones whose love has been so unconditional.”
Ronald was preceded in death by both of his parents, Harry Prough Jr, and Ethel Prough/Printy. He is survived by his two sisters Rhonda Anderson (Prough), and Marilyn (Rodney) Masters, aunt Doris (Rodney) Christensen, uncle Dale (Fern) Cottrell, uncle Harold (Daphen) Prough, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved dogs.
At Ronald’s request, no services will be held.

Harold Francis Prough

April 28, 1926 ~ March 23, 2020 (age 93)

 Harold Francis Prough was born April 28, 1926 to Harry and Birdella Prough in their home in rural Russell, Iowa.  Harold was the youngest of five children.  He attended rural schools through the eighth grade then went to Russell High School.
Harold enlisted in the Navy at the age of seventeen during World War II and served in the Asian Pacific Theater aboard the USSLCS (L) 35 (landing craft support) as a motor machinist mate first class.  He took part in the battles of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Leyte, Saipan and others.
Upon returning to the states, he married the love of his life and best friend, Daphen Lucille Wilson, on March 21, 1946, They enjoyed 74 years of married life together.  He was honorably discharged in July of 1946.  The couple spent the first three years of their marriage in Greeley, Colorado and Twin Falls, Idaho before returning to Iowa.  They are the parents of four children, Terry Wayne, Penny Marie, Lynford Francis and Julie Ann.
Harold ran a blacksmith welding repair shop in Moravia for twelve years, then worked for Iowa Southern Utilities in the Moravia, Centerville district before being transferred to Newton, Iowa.  After retiring the couple moved back to Chariton.
Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and especially spending time with his wife, four children, nine grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church, fifty year member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars.
Harold passed away March 23, 2020 at home with his wife Daphen by his side.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Della Prough; parents-in-law, Ted and Arlie Wilson; son Lenny Prough, granddaughter Cory Lewis and great-granddaughter Lita Rowley; brothers Merlin (Mildred) Prough; Harry Jr. (Ethel) Prough; sisters Haloise (Evan) Olson; Opal (Ellis) Goalsby; sister-in-law Mildred (Dean) Coles.  Left to mourn his passing is his loving wife Daphen, his beloved children, Terry Prough, Penny Rowley, Julie Lewis, grandchildren Jennifer Howell, Christian (Naomi) Rowley, Jessica Prough, Caleb Prough, Travis (Rachel) Lewis, Trent (Jennifer) Lewis, Troy (Andrea) Lewis, Lindsey (Jake Fredrich) Lewis and twenty-six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.  Memorial may be made to the First United Methodist Church.  On line condolences may be made to www.fieldingfuneralhomes.com.

Lois Ivy Coffey Obituary

Lois Ivy Coffey

March 16, 1945 ~ February 25, 2020 (age 74)

Ivy Coffey was born March 16, 1945 to Ivan and Georgia Kost in Leon, Iowa.  She was the youngest of three girls and spent most of her early days on the Kost farm east of Humeston.  School was attended at both Cambria and Mormon Trail school districts in Wayne County where she greatly enjoyed playing 6-on-6 basketball.  Ivy entered into marriage with Jack Coffey on June 9, 1962 in LeRoy, Iowa.

Some of her fondest memories were working at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames where she learned both compassion and humanity.  She briefly lived in Mount Ayr before setting roots in Russell.  Ivy and Jack worked to build their dream house south of Russell where she enjoyed her passion for nature, animals, and gardening. Ivy worked at Hy-Vee Regal Stamps before she began her life-long career working for the Russell Community School.  She greatly enjoyed helping educate and watching young children grow and prosper.  Ivy was often remembered for being quoted, “They can’t take an education away from you” which fueled her desire for constant    much (“her little cabin in the woods”) where she spent every moment she could observing nature.  Ivy was a prolific reader and read for both relaxation and education.  Gardening, fishing, cooking, and quilting occupied much of her time when she wasn’t with her grandchildren.  Over the years, Ivy could often be found by some of her favorite fishing holes, never afraid to share a minnow or a worm.  While Ivy was known for her wonderful homemade cooking, she will always be remembered for her joyous trays of Christmas candy.  She enjoyed trying to pass her recipes along to her grandchildren, but we know they will never be duplicated. 

Ivy was preceded in death by her husband Jack, parents Ivan and Georgia, sister Phyllis (Dale) Briley, mother-in-law Kathryn (Mardis) Coffey (Roy) Renoe, and brother-in-law Denny Clifton.  She is survived by her daughter Sandy (Brad) Piatt of Ankeny, Iowa, son Jim (Lisa) Coffey of Indianola, Iowa, granddaughters Amber Piatt, Allison Coffey, and Julie Coffey, sister Marilyn Mosebach, brother-in-law Jake (Mary) Coffey, sister-in-law Linda Clifton, brother-in-law Randy Coffey, and many nieces and nephews.

 Ivy passed away February 25, 2020 at Legacy Lodge in Chariton.  Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Fielding Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, February 28 from 6-8pm.  Interment will be held at the Humeston Cemetery following services.  Memorials may be made to Lucas County Conservation located at Pin Oak Lodge in Chariton, Iowa.  Online condolences may be made to www.fieldingfuneralhomes.com.
