Caryl Henry Bond Obituary

Caryl H. Bond, 88, of Davenport passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at the Kahl Home. Funeral

services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, July 20, 2013 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will

be from 5-7 pm on Friday, July19 at the mortuary. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bond was born August 25, 1924 in Russell, Iowa, the son of Guy and Mary (Hall) Bond. He

served in the U.S. Army Occupational Forces in Japan. On December 31, 1951 he married Norma Jones in Davenport. She preceded him in death on December 18, 2008.

He was a sixty-five year member of Laborer's International Union of North America, Local 309.

His hobbies included raising horses and home maintenance and construction.

Survivors include his children: Charles Bartel, Suzan Bartel, Karen Bartel, Joanne Bond-Troup, Jo Lynn Dumoulin, and Carlene Sarlette; fifteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and twelve great-great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Anna Loree Coulson Obituary

Anna Loree Coulson, age 87, of Polk City and formerly of Knoxville, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013, at the Polk City Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Polk City, Iowa.  Anna was born at home in rural Russell, Iowa on October 25, 1925, the daughter of Harold Lee and Alta Rowena (Lynn) Horner. Anna was a graduate of the Russell High School.  After graduation Anna worked for a short time for J. C. Penny’s and at the V.A. Hospital before she was united in marriage to William Dwayne “Bill” Coulson on September 2, 1951 in Lucas County, Iowa. Anna was a homemaker and the bookkeeper for the family business of A. L. Coulson Plumbing and Heating, until she and Bill retired in 1988. Anna and Bill shared over 56 years of marriage together and were blessed with four children: Carrol, Allen, Zina and Rowena. Bill died on July 31, 2008.  Anna was a member of the Faith Baptist Church and a longtime member and the last surviving charter member of the Knoxville Regular Baptist Church. For over 20 years she was a Sunday School Teacher for two and three year olds. She also enjoyed Word Find Puzzles, Television and she especially enjoyed and loved her grandchildren.  Anna is survived by her children: Carrol (Peggy) Coulson of Iowa Falls, Zina (Todd) Tigges of Dexter and Rowena (Nick) Kirk of Polk City; 13 grandchildren: Rachel (Jake) Willoughby, Joshua (Kristin) Coulson, Jacob Coulson, Heather (Justin) Riddle, Michele (Justin) Compton, Jason (Jennifer) Tigges, Phillip (Becky) Tigges, Courtney (Ben) Clausen, Chantal (John Tyler) Slayton, Kyle Moon, Noah Kirk, Clayton Kirk and Nathan Kirk; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Doris Clanin of Chariton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill; her son: Allen Coulson; one brother: Robert Horner; and one sister: Audrey Mains.  Visitation for Anna will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Anna’s family will be present Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 2nd at the Faith Baptist Church of Knoxville with Pastor Curtis Gordon officiating. Calvin McCullough Death

The Russell Community was saddened to hear of the death of Calvin McCullough who died recently in Idaho.  He was the son of Ivan McCullough and Elaine McCullough

Calvin McCullough, 60, April 16, 1953 - May 31, 2013

On Friday, May 31, 2013, Cal passed away after a very short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Cal was born on April 16, 1953 and grew up in Russell, Iowa.  He  enjoyed telling stories about his first jobs of driving the garbage truck and doing maintenance at the cemetery.  After he graduated from Russell High School in 1971, Cal moved to North Idaho in 1974 where he met his wife Leah in 1977.  In 1981, Cal went to Anchorage, Alaska and returned to North Idaho in 1987 to start a family.  Cal enjoyed spending time with his family at their home in Hayden while also handling his own construction company, McCullough Construction.  Together they burned brush, played croquet and bocce ball and rode 4 wheelers around the property.  One of his favorite things to do was to go to Chiefs and Shock games with his daughters and friends.  Cal also spent a lot of time at his daughters' sporting events and helping his girls with their 4-H animals and projects.  He enjoyed hunting, camping, watching NASCAR and football and going to the flea market.

He is survived by his wife Leah, his oldest daughter and her husband, Danielle and Travis Miller, his middle daughter, Michelle, and his youngest daughter, Alissa.  He is also survived by his dad, Ivan McCullough of Russell, Iowa, his mom, Eleaine McCullough of Oskaloosa, Iowa, his brothers Arnan of Wichita, Kansas, Kevin (Cindi) of Russell, Iowa and Galen (Pam) of Chariton, Iowa and his sisters Jennine (Steve) Rex of Enumclaw, Washington, Mo White of Chariton, Iowa and Coleen McCullough of Oskaloosa, Iowa.  He was preceded in death by his brother Allan.

Margaret Ann (Kells) Kylander Obituary

Margaret "Ann" Kylander was born on September 22, 1922 in Russell (Lucas County) Iowa.  She was the eldest child of Glen A. Kells and Edythe M. Wright Kells.  Other children include Robert Kells (deceased), Wanda Kells Calderon and Husband Haim of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Jo Ke

Ann was born on the family farm, Kells Acres Farm and attended the Pleasant Mound elementary school, about 1.5 miles walk from her home.  High school years were completed in Russell where she would ride three miles to town on her horse, Nell, a cantankerous mare that was always in the mood for kicking, making Ann the most experienced with horses in the family.  She would leave Nell in Great Grandma Margaret Ann Kells barn and walk onto school, not sure of what mischief Nell would get into while she was gone.  In the wintertime, Ann would drive to school in a one-horse sleigh, which is still in the family.  After high school graduation in 1939 she attended Iowa State College in Cedar falls, Iowa and received her teaching certificate.  She then taught 1st-4th grades in Randall, Iowa and the 4th grade in Glenwood, Iowa.  She began teaching at only 17 years of age.

In 1945, Ann decided she needed to move west to find someone to marry that she wasn't related to and settled in Powell, Wyoming with an aunt and uncle.  This is where she met John Francis Kylander, just home from the Navy and WWII.  John worked in a gas station and often took coffee breaks at a small cafe across the street where he met the "new first grade teacher in town".  The sparks flew and so goes the story and they were married on April 20, 1946 in Billings, Montana.  In 1948, son Jed A. was born and in 1950 the Kylander family moved to Cheyenne, Wyo. where "Francie" went to work with the Union Pacific Railroad as a switchman and later a brakeman.  In 1952 daughter Sue A. was born.  Ann continued teaching as a substitute teacher for many years and she also enjoyed visiting her children's classes now and then in elementary school.

Ann and Francie were members of the First Baptist Church in Cheyenne for more than 50 years.  She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and in their later years Ann and Francie volunteered in the nursery department during church services.  Ann also volunteered her time at the Eventide Nursing Home reading to the residents, fulfilling her joy of reading.

When Francie retired from the UP Railroad in 1983, after 33 years of service, they began to travel south for the winter months enjoying the warmer climates of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.  They would return to Cheyenne for the summer to enjoy hobbies of gardening, reading, family genealogy and spoiling the grandchildren.  In 2010, Ann and Francie moved to Kremmling, Colo to live with their daughter Sue.  John Francie passed away on March 3, 2010 at age 87 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.  Margaret Ann passed away on May 18, 2013 shortly after a stroke.

Ann is survived by her son, Jed and his wife Rosemary of Cheyenne and her daughter Sue and her husband Dennis Pratt of Kremmling, Colo.  She is also survived by three grandchildren and their spouses and six great-grandchildren; also her two sisters and many nieces and nephews.  Margaret Ann and John Francis Kylander will be interred at the Powell, Wyoming cemetery at a later time.

Doris June (Bennett) Werts Obituary

Doris June Werts, age 87, of Knoxville, passed away Monday morning, May 20, 2013, at the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics of Knoxville, Iowa. Doris was born in Russell, Iowa, on June 3, 1925, the eldest child of Clell and Ruby (Kimler) Bennett. Doris was raised in rural Russell and graduated from Russell High School, Class of 1943. During high school Doris earned her normal training and after high school began to teach in country school near Russell.  Doris taught for two years before she and George Werts, Jr. were united in marriage on March 18, 1945 at the Methodist Parsonage in Chariton, Iowa. Doris and George shared 68 years of marriage together before Doris’ passing and were blessed with two children: Darrell and Kay. Doris enjoyed living in Russell, being a homemaker and raising her children. In 1951 George began working with the Knoxville V.A. Hospital and Doris and George moved their family to Knoxville. Doris was a homemaker for several years before working in several local stores in Knoxville. She was also a seamstress for many years, and helped her son with the Iowa Blind Commission. Doris was a member and always very active with the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and she enjoyed knitting. Doris and George were also active with the Red Rock Good Sam Camp Club. She was a great wife and a loving mother and grandmother. Doris is survived by her husband of 68 years George Werts, Jr. of Knoxville; their daughter, Kay (Rudy) Benki of Ankeny; four grandchildren: Kris (Kelli) DeBont, Kelli (Chris) Farley, Mason Benki and Eric Benki; three great-grandchildren: Blake, Paige and Chase; and two step great-grandchildren: Britney and Josh. Doris is also survived by one sister, Clarice (Ed) Erickson; and one Brother, Dale (Debbie) Bennett; several nieces, nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; their son, Darrell Werts and his wife Diane “Dee”; one great-grandson, Alex DeBont; and two sisters. Harold Rasmus was born on April 19, 1919 at Chariton, Iowa to Clifford A. Rasmus and Belle (Gookin) Rasmus.

Harold passed away on May 20, 2013 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chariton, Iowa. He was 94 years old.

Harold is survived by his sister, Martha (Rasmus) McCormick and brother-in-law Kenneth C. McCormick of Lucas, Iowa.

Harold immensely enjoyed teasing his nieces Connie (Leon) Ehlers of Lucas, Iowa; Carol McCormick of Bentonville, Arkansas; and Carla (Guy) Hausrath of Plattsburgh, New York.

He is also survived by great-nieces, Laurie (Chad) Breyfogle of Cincinnati, Ohio; Lisa Jo Ehlers, of the United States territory of Guam; Katherine Hausrath of Plattsburgh, New York; great-nephews Kenneth Hausrath, Stephen Hausrath, and Thomas Hausrath, all of Plattsburgh, New York; and great, great-niece Amelia Noel Breyfogle of Cincinnati, Ohio. Harold's early school years were spent at the Meyers country school in Benton Township of Lucas County. When weather allowed he rode his pony, Tommy, to school. Harold graduated from Chariton High School in 1937. He and Kenneth were in the same class. They frequently reminisced about their high school days. Harold was a farmer and raised turkeys and cattle. Harold lived on the farm for over 50 years.

On July 10, 1981 Harold married Genevieve (Gen) Lockridge.  After a few years on the farm, they moved to Russell.  Harold and Gen faithfully attended the Center Church east of Russell.  In 2006 Harold and Gen moved to the Chariton Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.  Services will be held May 24, 2013 at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa.  Visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral service will follow at  2:00 p.m.  Interment will be at the Russell Cemetery.

Marilyn (Hawk) Martin Obituary

Marilyn Jane Martin, 81, formally of Chariton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Montrose Nursing Center.

Marilyn was born on February 26 1932 at home in Russell, Iowa to Clell (Sonny) and Ruth (Russell) Hawk.

She graduated from Chariton High School and Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines.

On July 5, 1953 Marilyn was united in marriage to LaVerne (Sarg) Martin of Derby in Chariton.  To this union, they were blessed with two daughters, Kim and Kelly, and two sons, Roger and Brian.  Marilyn was an Air Force wife, living in Omaha, Guam, Massachusetts, Germany, Washington, D.C., Florida, and Colorado; giving birth to Kim in Omaha, Roger in Guam, Brian in Massachusetts, and Kelly in Germany.  She moved her family many times from coast to coast and country to country before coming back home to Chariton.  She worked at Hy-Vee, collected blue glass, loved auctions and hosted many family gatherings.  She was a very loving and caring person, readily making long lasting friendships everywhere she went.

Proceeding Marilyn in her death were her parents, her husband LaVerne (Sarg), her daughter Kim, her brothers Gary Hawk and Jack Hawk.

Marilyn is survived by sons Roger of Montrose, Brian of Chariton, and daughter Kelly of Des Moines, sister Patty Carson of Illinois, brother Jim (Chickenhawk) Hawk of Williamson, grandchildren; Derek, Hilary, Amber, Quinn, Shadee, Trinity, and Zachary and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins,

friends and her beloved dog Duchess.

Hilton Roderic "Rod" Turbot Obituary

March 19, 1919 - April 3, 2013

H. Roderic "Rod" Turbot, age 94 of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away Thursday evening, April 4, 2013 at the McGraw Center for Caring in Jacksonville, FL.  Mr. Turbot was born on March 19, 1919 in Russell, Iowa, the son of the late Hilton A. Turbot and Mary Meryle Wright.  He was a native of Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1936.  He attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Engineering in 1942.  Mr. Turbot joined the war effort and became a flight instructor for the United States Army-Air Corp during WWII.  He also met and married Cora Dudley during that time and they resided in Chariton, Iowa.  Following the war, he began giving private flight instructions.  Mr.Turbot later was employed by Johnson Machine Works in Chariton, Iowa, building bridges and aircraft hangers.  In 1959, he relocated along with his family to Fernandina Beach where he formed ACME Machine Works in Jacksonville, FL and retired in 1984.  He leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Cora Dudley "Coty" Turbot of Fernandina Beach, FL his son H. Roderic Turbot II of Orlando FL, his daughters, Mary Pamela Grant and Deborah Ann Nordstrom both of Fernandina Beach, FL.  His brother, Larry Turbot of Omaha, NE, one grandson and three great-grandchildren of Chatham, NJ.  A service is planned at a later date.  Memorials may be made in his name to Community Hospice, 4715 Worrall Way, Jacksonville, FL 32224.

Ervin Lowell Burton

(July 18, 1923 - April 4, 2013)

Ervin Lowell Burton was born on July 18, 1923 in Kirksville, Missouri, the son of William A. Burton and Nellie Gonsor Burton, and went to heaven on April 4, 2013 with his family surrounding him at his daughter's home after a brave battle with cancer.

Ervin enjoyed walking in nature, hunting, fishing, recycling, watching sports events, and spending time with his family friends and his church family. He was active in the VFW, Lions Club, American Legion, Democratic Party, Masons, PURE, Alzheimer's Association, Faith Methodist Church of Russell, Iowa, Community Club, and several public education support groups.

Ervin graduated from Cincinnati Iowa High School before entering the Army in 1943.

He served in WWII on the European Front and was awarded The Bronze Star while there.

He married Jessie Emma Carey on August 6, 1945 in Centerville, Iowa.

After leaving the Army, he went on to receive a B.A. from Parsons College and graduate degrees from Drake University.

Ervin worked in the field of public education for 36 years.

He was employed in Kahoka, MO; Cincinnati, Iowa; Moravia, Iowa; Moulton-Udell, Iowa; Clear Creek Community in Tiffin, Iowa; Davis County in Bloomfield, Iowa; Mediapolis, Iowa; and Russell, Iowa.

Upon his retirement, Ervin stated, "I will miss the opportunity to help better our schools from within."

Surviving are his children, Rick (Sandy) Burton of Palm Harbor, Florida; Pamela Lindley Smith of Iowa City, Iowa; and Cheryl (Paul) Schomberg of Dubuque, Iowa.

Ervin had 9 grandchildren: Tara (Mike) Kuk, Joshua (Lauren) Burton, Sherry (Eban) Hill, Maxwell Smith, Margeaux (Angelo) Ramirez, John (Sharon) Schomberg, Luke (Ruth) Schomberg, Zachary Schomberg, and Halee Schomberg.

He was also survived by 7 great grandchildren: Demetrius Ramirez, Charlotte Ramirez, Willow Ramirez, Ian Schomberg, Hans Schomberg, Kai Schomberg, and Raven Westpheling-Smith.

Ervin was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Carey Burton, four brothers and three sisters, his parents, and one grandson Ben Matthew Schomberg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer's Association in Ervin's name.

The family of Ervin would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Dawn and Penny, Dr. Christian Schultheis, and Dr. Scott A. Brock, who gave care and support to him and his family in the last months of his life.

Dean Lewis Werts Obituary

Dean Lewis Werts was born in Russell January 23, 1922, and passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at the age of 91, at the Legacy Lodge in Chariton, Iowa.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Artie Werts, his wife, Ruth Werts, grandson, Todd Anthony Werts, and siblings, Wilma Strait, Roger Werts, and Dale Werts. He is survived by his four children and spouses; Carl and Ellen Werts of Russell, Rhea and Craig Weideman of Virginia Beach, VA; Mark and Nadene Werts of Graham, WA; and Lynn and Freddie Stuart of Chariton; eight grandchildren and several spouses, Chad and Alissa Werts, Brandy Japhet, Jason and Karen Stuart, Shawn and Katie Werts, Justin and Tina Stuart, Gavin Werts, Jaci and Tom Ripperger, and Jansen and Amy Stuart; thirteen great-grandchildren; with number fourteen to arrive shortly; brother and sister-in-law, Burdette and Lois Werts; sisters-in-law, Deloris Werts and Charlotte Werts; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bob and Mary Ellen Moore.
Other than a few years in Nebraska, Dean spent his entire life in the Russell Lucas County area and graduated from Russell High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September 1940, earned his wings and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1943.  Flying the P47" Thunderbolt" fighter, Dean flew over 100 combat missions over Europe during World War II. He married Ruth Deutschle February 21, 1945, in Ottumwa, Iowa. Dean was discharged from the service December 31, 1945, and began farming. They lived on two different farms near Russell.

Dean was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Russell and a lifetime member of Russell American Legion, Charlie Clark Post #308. He served on the Russell School Board and the Federal Land Bank Board. He enjoyed deer hunting, farming, and spending time with his family. Dean and Ruth also enjoyed spending their winters in South Texas.

Pall bearers were Jason, Justin and Jansen Stuart, Shawn Werts, Freddie Stuart and Craig Weideman. Honorary bearers were Chad and Gavin Werts, Brandy Japhet , Jaci Ripperger, Ralph Conner, and Phil Shenefield.

Visitation for Dean was Saturday, March 30, at 9:30 a.m. with services to follow at 10:30 a.m.; burial in the Russell Cemetary.

Glendoris Fern Shelton Tanner Obituary

Glendoris Fern Shelton was born on November 18, 1923 to Robert and Florence (Hale) Shelton.  She grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota.  On December 24, 1940, she married her childhood sweetheart William Harry Tanner in Mora, Minnesota.  They were blessed with four beautiful children:  Judith, Wanda, Raelynn  and Kevin.  Glendoris died on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at the age of 89.

Glendoris taught reading at 4 Peaks Elementary School in Apache Junction, Arizona.  She enjoyed music, reading and taking care of her family.  She spent many hours crocheting and sewing.  She and Harry loved their little Pomeranian dogs; several were named Molly.  Their present little Molly will miss her terribly.  She loved her home in Russell and was an immaculate housekeeper.  She loved Harry as much when she passed as she did when they were childhood sweethearts.  Everyone who knew Glendoris loved her.  She will be missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband Harry, sisters Veva Modesto of Arizona, Darlene Nelson and Marilynn Brankom of Minnesota, Gladys Shelton of Oregon, daughters Wanda (Teddy) Reed, Raelynn (Scott) Luehring and son Kevin Tanner.  Grandchildren David (Cindy) Glover, Quint Porter, Shawn Porter, Zina (James) Britt, Tina Reed, Harry G. Reed, Abby (Chris) Cunningham, Ian Luehring and Trevor (Jenna) Tanner.  She was also blessed with many great and great-great-grandchildren, all of which she enjoyed spending time with.

Services for Glendoris Fern Tanner were held Monday, March 25, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa with Pastor David Tyree officiating.  Visitation was held Sunday, March 24, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Interment was at the Chariton Cemetery following services.

Pallbearers were Shawn Porter, Jim Britt, Quint Porter, Larry Templeton, Ian Luehring, Richard Porter and Chris Cunningham.

Bruce was born in Centerville on September 20, 1957 to Richard and Marie (Scheitel) Linville.  He received his education from Russell High School graduating in 1976. Bruce worked on the family farm and drove a truck over the road.  He enjoyed doing mechanical work and listening to music.  Bruce really enjoyed watching woodworking and farm shows on television.

Bruce is survived by three siblings: Marceline (Dennis) Slack of Kingston, Iowa, Rhonda (Mark) White of Chariton, Dennis Linville of Chariton and 11 nieces and nephews. His parents preceded Bruce in death.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton with Rev. Rich Gates officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior from 1-2 p.m. Memorials may be given to the family, which will be designated at a later date. Interment will be in Confidence Cemetery.

Mary E. Isley Obituary

Mary Ellin (Brees) Isley of Knoxville, Iowa, formerly of Russell, Iowa, passed away on March 5, 2013 at the Comfort House Hospice of Pella, Iowa.  Mary was born December 19, 1933, daughter of Walter and Ruth (Kelley) Brees.  She attended Blaine Grade School, north of Knoxville and attended High School in Knoxville, Iowa.  She married Chester D. Isley, May 5, 1951 at Elizabeth City, North  Carolina.  They were blessed with two children, Don Isley and Nancy (Isley) Kinsey.  Mary spent 14 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Lucas County Hospital in Chariton, and 2 years at Casey's.  Mary went to be with Chet her husband of 47 years, her parents, twin infant sisters Jane and June, and sister Esther Woolridge.  She is survived by her son, Chester Donald Ivey Jr. of Perry,daughter Nancy Kinsey of Lovilla, four grandchildren; Ashlee (John) Davis of Hamilton, IA, Chelsee Kinsey of Denver, Colorado, Angelica and Terry Isley of Perry.Mary was blessed with 2 great grandchildren, Braxton and Taylor Davis of Hamilton, Iowa whom she loved dearly.  She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.  Mary's family was the love of her life.  Mary loved going to the kid's ballgames, grandchildren basketball and softball games.  She had a love for country music and was a huge Elvis Presley fan.  She liked gardening and flowers, and enjoyed dancing with Chet.  She will be greatly missed by all.  Until we meet again, I love you all dearly.

Gwendolyn Marcelle (Allard) Arnold

Gwendolyn Marcelle (Allard) Arnold of Chariton, passed away at Iowa Methodist Hospital on January 15, 2013 at the age of 85 years.
Gwen was born February 12, 1927 in Decatur County, Iowa to Linden Allard and Dorthea (Meyers) Allard. She lived on a farm south of Russell and attended country school and then graduated from Russell High School in 1943.
On October 29, 1944, she was united in marriage to E. Max Arnold at the First Baptist Church in Russell, Iowa. They lived on a farm south of Chariton, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Larry, Dwayne, and Joyce. She was a devoted housewife and worked part-time as a secretary and bookkeeper at Arnold Bros. Inc. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She faithfully attended the First Baptist Church located in Chariton, Iowa until her health began to fail.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Linden and Dorthea Allard; her brother, Calvin Allard and her sister, Linden Allard.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Max Arnold of Chariton, IA; her children, Larry Arnold of Bentonville, AR, Dwayne Arnold of Chariton, IA, and Joyce Arnold of Chariton, IA; her grandchildren, Heather (Travis) Kirkland of Centerville, IA, Misty Arnold of West Des Moines, IA, Kim (Mitch) Semon of Shreveport, Louisiana, Brain Halferty of Derby, IA and Brad Halferty; her great grandchildren, Cade, Maddie, and Quincy Kirkland of Centerville, IA, Olivia, Natalee, and Lance Halferty of Derby, IA and McKenzie Halferty of Chariton, IA; and many friends and family.

Dorcas Davis Obituary

Memorial services for Dorcas and Earl Davis will be held January 24, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton with family receiving friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in care of HCI Care Services or the Chariton Senior Center.
Dorcas was born March 13, 1924 in Russell, Iowa to Guy and Hazel McKinley Smith. She graduated Russell High School in 1944. She was married to Charlie Powers and to this union Shirley was born.
Earl was born May 15, 1922 in Russell, Iowa to Lambert and Mabel Scarr Davis. He graduated from Russell High School in 1939 and attended Parsons College for a year. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific until 1946.
On February 20, 1947 Dorcas and Earl were united in marriage, to this union two children were born: Terry and Sonya. They farmed together until 1972. They also both worked at Russell Produce during this time. In addition Earl worked at Johnson Machine Works and later for Arnold Brothers in Russell and Dorcas worked at Bob Stone Cordage and Farmers Co-op for many years.
After selling the farm in 1972 Dorcas and Earl enjoyed traveling during the winter months for 23 years in Arizona, California, Texas, and Florida. Earl enjoyed the farm and woodworking. Dorcas enjoyed making crafts, knitting, crocheting, gardening, canning, and playing cards. They both enjoyed the time spent with family and especially enjoyed their grandchildren.
Dorcas passed away January 19, 2013 at the age of 88 years; her husband Earl passed away March 30, 2005 at the age of 82. Preceding them in death were their parents; siblings: Florence Osenbaugh, Charles Smith, Vernon Smith, and Noland Smith who died as an infant; and by two sons-in-law and a daughter-in-law. They are survived by children: Shirley Powers Morr, Terry Davis, and Sonya Putz; 5 grandchildren: Lori (Jeff) Hansen, Marty (Nancy) Wantland, Toni (Todd) Perdew, Earl (Danielle) Putz, and Lewis Putz; 8 great grandchildren; and 6 great great grandchildren

Leola I. McKinley Obituary

Leola I. McKinley was born on Monday, November 5, 1917 and passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2013, in Fort Dodge, Iowa and is now reunited with her husband Paul Foster McKinley who left us several years ago.  Leola is survived by sisters Bethel Harrington and Wilma Ralston, two sons, Terry and Robert; five grandchildren, Christoper, Danita, Arron, Thomas and Kristina; and six great grandchildren: Chloe, Isaac, Bella, Caleb, Kieran and Madelyn.

Paul and Leola were devoted to each other, and to their ministry in Evangelical United Brethern and United Methodist Church churches.  Paul aslo served for several yeas as Chaplin at the United methodist retirement campus, Friendship Village in Fort Dodge and later were residents and volunteers there, until Leola's passing.

We celebrated their lives on January 28, 2013 at a memorial servie at Friendship Village and on January 29, 2013 in Chariton, Iowa, where they lived for many years after they retired and where firneds and relatives reside today.

Leola will be interred next to Paul in a small cemetery outside Russell, Iowa, where Paul's father left farming to become an ordained pastor.  God has surely prepared a place for them, and both have been eager to meet again.

Let us celebrate their reunion and the love of God they felt so deeply.

James E. Werts Obituary

Memorials are requested to the Russell Historical Museum or the First Baptist Church in Russell.

James E. Werts was born October 20, 1931 at home near Russell, Iowa to Ralph and Alice (Wright) Werts. He graduated from Russell High School in 1950 and joined the United States Air Force in 1951. He served during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany as a decoder. Jim started dating Beverly Pierce in high school and they were married September 5, 1952. They were blessed with three daughters: Wendy, Terry, and Cindy.

Jim enjoyed collecting. He collected guns, coins, Gene Autry memorabilia, and loved collecting tractors. He went to many tractor pulls and always enjoyed local parades and rides. Jim was a man of many talents. He could fix anything around the home or farm. He was very proud of Russell and volunteered his time and talents; serving as vice president of the Russell Museum, a member of the Russell Town Band; and a member, deacon, choir director, and trustee of the First Baptist Church. He especially enjoyed singing in a quartet and at his church.

He often enjoyed a game of chess with his brother, Burton. Jim was always close to his family, spending time with them and enjoying simple pleasures that life offered. His girls remember many family vacations, especially the trip to Yellowstone with all five of them riding in the front of a pick up. Jim & Bev camped at the Iowa State Fair every year from 1956 until 2011.

Jim passed away on December 23, 2012 at the age of 81 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Burton Werts and Mary Lee Werts; and a great grandson Max Sander.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Beverly; daughters: Wendy (Dan) Blue, Terry (Rick) Elmore, Cindy (Robert) Smith; 9 grandchildren: Jeremy, Jenny, Jamie, Kelly, Conrad, Kayla, Jason, Juston, and Jordon; and 14 great grandchildren. Also surviving are many relatives and a host of friends.

Olive Marie (Lord) Howie Obituary

Services for Olive Howie, 85, were held Monday, December 24, 2012 at 2 p.m.  Visitation was held Friday, December 21, 2012 from 6-8p.m.  Interment was in Bethel Cemetery.  Fielding Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Olive Marie Lord Howie was born November 24, 1927 in Grinnell, Iowa to George and Cordia (Morgan) Lord.  She passed from this life Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012 in Albia, Iowa at the age of 85 years.

Olive was a warm loving person who accepted people for who they were.  She also raised a large family and her children's friends were always welcomed in her home.  Olive was a mother and Granny to lots of people who were only related by her love.  She was loved and respected by many.  Even though life had challengers and was sometimes difficult for Olive, she still managed to love and raise ten children.  Olive could be described as an amazingly hard worker.  However, she did have a love for the outdoors.  She enjoyed planting and working a large vegetable garden.  Olive had an apprecidation for the beauty of flowers as well.  In her spare time, she also enjoyed going for long walks and collecting interesting rocks found in nature.

Olive was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Howie; her parents, George Cordia (Morgan) Lord, and her sister, Anna Mae Lord.

Jennie Parks Spry Obituary

Jennie Parks Spry, 95, peacefully passed away on Thursday December 6, 2012 at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Centerville, Iowa.

Jennie was born September 6, 1917 in Russell, Iowa to Delno and Bessie (Hoerner) La Favre.  She graduated from Russell High School in Russell, Iowa.  Jennie married James Parks and they had three children, Mary Jewett of Cottonwood, Arizona, Betty Veenstra of Urbandale, Iowa, and Bill (Carolyn) Parks of Ogunquit, ME.  In 1962 James and Jennie moved to Centerville where they purchased Parks and Brunt Ford.  James died in 1971.

In 1974, Jennie married William Spry and moved to Des Moines where she lived until failing health required her to move to a care facility in Centerville under the loving, watchful care of her granddaughter, Dr. Kathy Lange.  Jennie loved watching her children and grandchildren's sports and activities, bridge, traveling, golf, singing, sports and volunteering in the community, where she was active in PEO.  Jennie was an avid reader of self-improvement articles, healthy recipes, and financial reports which she lovingly copied and passed on to her children and grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday December 15, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville.  Burial followed in the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville.  A Rosary was held on Friday at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Jennie Spry Memorial Fund, Hospice of Central Iowa, or St. Joseph's Family Shelter and may be given to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com. Charles W. Cook Obituary

Charles W. Cook, 89, passed November 23, 2012. He was born on January 2, 1923 in Woodburn, IA of rural Clarke County where he resided until 1945 when he joined the army. In 1948 he moved to a farm in Lucas Co. north of Russell Iowa. Charles farmed and drove truck for Etter Livestock until his retirement in 1997. After retirement he moved to Southgate Apartments in Chariton, IA. After moving to town Charles found a passion in working with the Lucas County Humane Society where he volunteered and enjoyed walking the dogs.

In January 1949 Charles married Catherine Jones. When they went to be married Charles called Rev. Beals from Irving Station, they were married that Friday in Rev. Beals rural Russell home. With their union they had 3 children Florence, David, and Gene.

Charles is preceded in death by his father Orval L. Cook and mother Margaret E. Smith-Cook.

Charles is survived by his wife Catherine, children Florence (Marshall) Comstock, David (Barbra) Cook, Gene (Sabrina) Cook, former daughter in-law Jeannie Tuttle-Cook, 9 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.

Gertrude Henrietta (Holst) Larson Obituary

Gertrude Henrietta (Holst) Larson, 91, died peacefully on Wednesday, Octobe 24, 2012 while under the care of Hospice of Central Iowa.  She resided at Pleasant Care Living Center at Pleasantville, Iowa where she had been a resident from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.  Previously she lived in rural Wayne County and Russell, Iowa.

She was born on August 27, 1921, the 7th of 10 children of Henry and Alvina (Stahlbock) Holst in Deer Creek Township of Webster County, Iowa.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church, Deer Creek Township, Webster County, Iowa.  She married Stanley Casper Larson on November 18, 1945.  To this union of 47 years, six children were born.

After her marriage she and Stanley lived at rural Humboldt for about 4 years; then moved to Southern Iowa, near Confidence, to their farm.  She and Stanley farmed 120 acres together - raising corn,  beans and hay as well as livestock including milk cows, stock cows, a few pigs and chickens.  She was a hard worker.  In 1976 Stanley retired and they sold the farm and moved from the country to Russell.  She then cleaned homes in the Russell and Chariton areas and was employed for nearly 20 years at Piper's Store in Chariton, starting first doing general cleaning but ended up a "candy lady" making several varieties of candy and helping out in the deli department.  She very much enjoyed her years at Piper's.  She treasured her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Chariton.

She will be greatly missed by her three daughters:  Sarah (Clifford) Kitzman of Beaman; Linda (Dennis) Senecaut of Altoona; Lorraine (Richard) Forkner of Des Moines; three sons:  Harold of Des Moines, Russell (Pok) of Osan, Korea and Verne (Elaine) of Monument, CO.; and other family members.

Services were held October 30, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church in Chariton with Pastor Rich Gates officiating.

Bonnie (Mary Ann) Kern, 87, Obituary

Family received friends, Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton.  No services were planned.

Mary Ann Culp was born August 5, 1925 in Des Moines to Jess and Maude (Stout) Culp.  She was raised in Des Moines, Iowa and was an RN in her younger years; she enjoyed taking care of the elderly.  She was married to Clarence Kern and they were blessed with three children; Patty, Tommy and Rollie.

Bonnie enjoyed life and is described by family as crazy and fun.  She loved to laugh and have fun with her grandchildren, great, and great-great grandchildren and she loved babies.  She also loved the outdoors and loved to fish, trap and hunt; and taught many of her grandchildren to shoot.

Bonnie passed away on November 3, 2012.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Kern; children:  Patty Cahhal and Tommy Kern; grandchildren: Blue and Tammy; and siblings:  Lolly, Bill, Gene, and Nann

Bonnie is survived by her son, Rollie (Twyla) Kern of Russell; grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and brother Pate Culp.

Glenn Abrahamson Obituary

Glenn Robert Abrahamson was born February 9, 1924 in English township, Lucas County. Glenn was the sixth child born to Charley O. Abrahamson and Cynthia Miller Abrahamson. Glenn was raised on a farm and attended school in Lucas Co. He was baptized in 1936 at the May Baptist church. Glenn married Justine O. Gartin on August 24, 1947. To this union three children were born: Glenn Robert Jr., Charles Dewey, and Elizabeth Ann.

Glenn loved farming and was proud of the thresher he bought when only 16. He was also an avid woodworker and greatly enjoyed making doll houses, toy boxes, wheel barrows, work benches and many other things for his grandchildren. He took great joy in the two horse-drawn wagons he made, and in teaching his grandchildren some of the skills of woodworking.

Glenn was active in many organizations. He was chairman of Cedar Township ASC. He served as President of Lucas Co. Farm Bureau and served as voting delegate for 5 years for Lucas Co. Farm Bureau. He was a 4-H leader and served on the extension counsel. He also served on the Republican Central Committee. He was an active member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Russell and served on many committees. He served as Mayor of Russell for 8 years.

Preceding Glenn in death are his parents: Charley and Cynthia; his sisters: Mildred Abrahamson, Mary Feight and husband Stanley, Evelyn McCormick and husband Thomas, Lavon DeJoode and husband John, one brother, Pearl and wife Dorothy, and a great granddaughter, Avery Ann Palmer.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 65 years, Justine; sons: Glenn Robert and wife Jolene of Albia, Charles Dewey and wife Janet of Centerville, and daughter Elizabeth Ann and husband Gary Palmer of Corydon. Grandchildren: Travis and wife Cindy, Heidi and husband Tyson, Joshua and wife Jaimie, Brian and wife Dottie, Megan and husband Felix, Sara and husband Josey, Daniel and wife Shelly, Eric and wife Beth. Thirteen great grandchildren and one on the way.

Shirley F. McDonald Obituary

Shirley Evelyn Sellers McDonald passed away September 22, 2012 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center.  She was 87 years old.

Shirley was born April 27, 1925 in Lucas County, Iowa to John Mark and Maude Emmaline (Wright) Sellers.  She graduated from Russell High School in 1943 and earned her teaching certificate and took courses at Simpson College and Drake University.  Shirley taught country school at the Dickervile and Pershing schools in Cedar Township of Lucas County.  She also taught school in Marengo, Iowa and Melcher, Iowa.

On September 16, 1951 Shirley was united in marriage to Richard Eugene McDonald.  To this union six children were born; Mark Steven, Charles Stanley, Scott Richard, Sheila Marie, Sally Annette, and Sonnie Sue.  Shirley spent the next stage of her life raising her family and working on the family farm.  She was a member of the Russell and Chariton United Methodist churches and active in Sunday School and Bible School programs.  Her family was dear to her heart and she worked hard to raise them in a Christian way.

In 1973, the marriage dissolved and Shirley moved the family to Chariton.  She was employed at J.C. Penney and then at Lucas County Memorial Hospital as a ward clerk.  In 2008, because of health issues, Shirley moved to the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center.  She enjoyed visits from family and friends as well as the caretakers at the center.  Her room was often the place where many people stopped by to share a laugh or a concern.

Shirley was an avid reader and needleworker.  She made many afghans, doilies, slippers and caps and loved sharing them with anyone who stopped by to see her.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; brothers Keith, Clair and Richard; sister Helen; and son-in-law Joe Johnson.

Shirley will be missed by many.  Memorials may be given to the Chariton Library, Bethel Cemetery, Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center or Circle of Life.

Services were held September 26, 2012 at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa.  Visitation was held September 25, 2012 at the Funeral Home.  Interment was in the Bethel Cemetery.

Donald Johnson Obituary

Services for Donald Johnson, 63, were held Friday, September 21, 2012 at the New Providence Church.  Serving as Pallbearers were Joe Miller, Jake Rodgers, Brian Beaty, Jay Pierschbacher, Kevin Briggs, Sunny Atwell, Phil Shenefield and Marshal Schlutz.  Serving as Horsemen were Mike Beaty, Henry Yoder and sons, Richard Yoder and Harley Yoder.  Interment was in the Confidence Cemetery.  Family visitation was held September 20, 2012 at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton.

Donald Clarence Johnson was born on September 19, 1948 in Ida Grove, Iowa to Clarence and Alvena (Moss) Johnson.  He went home to be with the Lord on September 16, 2012 at the age of 63 due to complications following a double lung transplant.

Don spent all of his childhood in Ida Grove, Iowa graduating from Ida Grove High School in 1967.  Don served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.  Don was baptized as a child in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa.  He was a member of the New Providence Baptist Church and when he and Linda relocated to Pittsburgh to await his transplant, he returned to his childhood Missouri Synod Lutheran Church.

Don loved horses and enjoyed showcasing his horses every year in the Avenue of Breeds at the Iowa State Fair.

On May 28, 1983, Don married Linda Buttz of Russell and moved his family to rural Russell to follow his passion for farming and livestock.  Each of Don's five children has many fond memories of the time spent with their dad on the farm and off.

Left to cherish the wonderful memories are his wife Linda, his five children, Chad (Michele), Heather (Josh), Scott (Lori), Mark (Jill), Wes (Erin), his sister Margene, brother Ronnie (Patsy), sisters-in-law, and his eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Family House, Lucas County Extension/Lucas County 4-H Program or the New Providence Baptist Church.

His family believes that the donation of organs is a compassionate and heroic gift and they encourage everyone to be an organ donor as there are so many others waiting for their second chance.

Alice Dorothy Mason Obituary

Alice Dorothy Mason was the 9th of 10 children born to Carl A. and Nellie Rohrer Mason on December 6, 1923 in Redwood Falls, Minnesota.  The family moved to Lucas County in 1928 where she attended school.

She was united in marriage to James Ronald Mason on September 28, 1940 at the Baptist parsonage in Russell, Iowa by Rev. Archie Beals.

They started farming in 1944 and purchased the family farm in 1950.  They moved into Chariton in 1992.

Dorothy was a homemaker and after the children were grown she worked at Kemble Floral, Pipers Candy Store and Winchell's Grocery in Williamson.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chariton, United Methodist Women and Circle Leader.  She served many positions in the church, was a 4-H Leader, Charter Member of the Lucas County Genealogy Society, Sunsine Workers Club and Friendship Quilting Circle.

Services were held on Wednesday September 19, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Chariton, Iowa with Pastor Allen Wiese officiating.  Interment was held in the Chariton Cemetery following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church or the Lucas Coumty Genealogy Society.



Charles Otto Baughman, Jr. Obituary

Charles Otto Baughman Jr., 91, was born July 16, 1921 to Charles and Anna (Judd) Baughman in Russell, Iowa. He passed away on September 11, 2012 in Altoona, Iowa.

Charles grew up in Russell and worked on the family farm as well as Threlkeld's Service Station prior to World War II. He proudly serviced in the United States Army from 1943 until his discharge in 1946.

After the war Charles worked and then owned service stations in the Des Moines area mainly on the east side. After this Charles operated Iowa Liquidators. Everyone will always remember his ready smile, quick wit and his love of life.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, June (Adams) Baughman, sister-in-law Virginia Pasco, nieces Bernadette (Carl) Carnes, DeNise (Mark) Baker and Scottirae (Wayne) Owens. Also surviving are nephews Ron (Christine) Baughman, Bruce Swartfager, John (Marcia) Baughman and Joe (Melissa) Baughman. In addition to this Charles is survived by many great nieces and nephews who he dearly loved and they thought of him as a second father.

Preceding Charles in death were his parents, one sister Dorothy (Lindell) Johnson, one brother Robert (MaDonna) Baughman and his niece Bobbie Jo Swartfager.

Mary Alyce (McGrath) Sellers, daughter of Mary Veronica (Luttrell) and William Edmund McGrath, was born April 27, 1924 in Washington Township, Lucas County, Iowa. She passed from this life September 11, 2012 at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa at the age of 88 years.

Mary Alyce attended the Greenville County School and graduated from Chariton High School in 1940. She was employed from 1941 to 1948 as a secretary in the office of the Farmers Home Administration.

She was united in marriage to Harris Jay Sellers on June 12, 1948 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton, Iowa. To this union three sons were born, William Edward who died at birth, Harris Joseph, and Thomas Gerard.

Mary Alyce was active in many community organization including the following: Lucas County Farm Bureau Woman's Chairman and served on the 1967 Farm Bureau Woman's State Program Committee, President of the Chariton Woman's Club and Director and Board member of Iowa Federation of Woman's Clubs. Mary Alyce also served on the Lucas County Extension Council and served as Secretary/Treasure of the Lucas County 4-H Achievement Show for several years. She was active in school activities and she was the PTA President of Van Allen School and Chariton PTA Council. Mary Alyce served as a lector at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton for many years and on the Parish Council for 3 years. In 2001 Mary Alyce was inducted into the Lucas County Farm Bureau Ag Hall of Fame.

Mary Alyce is survived by sons, Tom Sellers and Joe (Cindy) Sellers of Chariton; step-granddaughter Katie Fiala of Des Moines; sister Margaret Scieszinski of Des Moines; three nieces, Anne Keen of O'Fallon, Missouri, Jane and Teresa Scieszinski of Windsor Heights; two nephews, John Sellers of Corydon and Patrick Sellers of Orem, Utah; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Jonach and Clara Miner of Sugar City, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and an infant son.

Her final resting place will be beside her husband and parents in the Catholic Cemetery in Chariton.

Memorials may be made in honor of Mary Alyce to the Lucas County 4-H or to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton.

Fern Adaline (Sellers) Cottrell Obituary

Fern Adaline (Sellers) Cottrell, 83, of Chariton, Iowa passed away August 31, 2012 at her home in
Chariton. Visitation for Fern will be Wednesday, September 5, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 5th at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home with Emery McDonald conducting the services. Burial will follow at the Russell Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Legacy Lodge Hospice House, Parents of Galactosemic Children, or the Susie Tuttle Dialysis Unit in Corydon. 

Fern was born in Lucas County near Russell to Dewey and Nora (Hull) Sellers on September 13, 1928. She married Dale Cottrell on February 14, 1947 in Russell, Iowa. She attended country schools and Chariton High School. She was a full time wife and mother to three girls. After her daughters were in school, she worked at Fullers General Store in Confidence. Raising chickens was a farm chore she enjoyed. A large garden was grown each year to preserve for her family, and she enjoyed sharing the bounty with friends and relatives. As a farm wife she was very active in the raising and care of the livestock, and participating in all phases of the farm operation.

Family was very important for Fern as she always put them first in her life. Holidays at her home were always very special. She loved to cook and bake and always shared with family and neighbors. Her bread, cinnamon rolls, donuts, homemade pies, and handmade noodles could not be beat by anyone. She passed on her baking ability to her daughters and granddaughters.

Fern is survived by husband Dale Cottrell; daughters: Linda (Larry) Chase of Chariton, Joyce (Michael) Thomas of Centerville, and Janet (Dewey) Abrahamson of Rathbun; grandchildren: Michelle (Dave) Hyman of Keota, Iowa, Brenda (Brian) Kotewa of Moscow, Idaho, Anne Thomas of Seymour, Lisa (Michael) Taylor of Cincinnati, Ohio, Brian (Dottie) Abrahamson of Ankeny, Megan (Felix) Munoz of Hiawatha, and Sara (Josey) Hanes of Ankeny; great grandchildren: Cortney, Matthew & Branden Hyman; Julia & Gabriel Kotewa; Yesmina, Leah, Braxtyn Thomas & Giana Taylor; and Laura, Justin & Christopher Abrahamson. Also surviving are sisters: Wilma Johnson of Creston, Marilyn (Jack) James and Wretha Paige of Chariton; sister-in-laws: Ethel Prough and Doris (Ronald) Christensen of Chariton. Also many nieces and nephews and the great staff at the Susie Tuttle Dialysis Unit in Corydon who have become family over the last several years.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents; her brother- Harold Sellers; and brother-in-laws: Frank Johnson and Don Paige.
