Rev. Charles Hawkins Obituary

Charles Burdette Hawkins, son of Cecil Clayton and Alice Helen (Anderson) Hawkins, was born January 11, 1932 in Lucas County, Iowa.
Charles grew up in Lucas County and graduated from Russell High School with the class of 1950. Following graduation, Charles enrolled at Omaha Bible Institute; graduating in 1953. During his time in college, he was also in the naval reserves.
On February 12, 1954, Charles was united in marriage to Phyllis Marie Collins at the First Baptist Church in Russell, IA. They were blessed with nearly 64 years of marriage.
Charles was a pastor and minister of the gospel for over 50 years. He ministered in Monroe, IA, Washington, IA, Algona, Iowa; was the camp director at church camp in Indiana; resuming pastoring churches in Webster City and Mount Ayr, IA. Charles retired from the Mount Ayr Regular Baptist Church and worked part time as a janitor at Clearview Home and led bible studies. While living in Washington, IA, Charles received his Teaching Certificate from the University of Iowa. He was board member emeritus at Faith Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary in Ankeny, Iowa. Charles was a member of Ringgold Post #172, American Legion and the Lions Club, both in Mount Ayr.
Charles and Phyllis became residents of Clearview Home in Mount Ayr and Charles went home to be with his Lord & Savior on Friday, February 9, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law Bob DeBoom.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Phyllis of Mount Ayr; 3 children Barbara (Phil) Hamburger of Gettysburg, SD, Cecilia (Jerry) Kempf of Crawfordsville, IN and Gordon (Stephanie) Hawkins of Fairfield, IA; 7 grandchildren Curtis (Rachel) Hamburger, Melody (Grant) Lunning, Courtney Kempf, Rachael (Josh) Worthington, Charles (Keeley) Hamburger, Joshua Hawkins, and Connor Hawkins; 11 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Donna (Jim) Byers of Ankeny, IA; 2 cousins, other relatives and friends.

Leo M. Sellers Obituary

 Leo Milton Sellers, 93, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Chariton Specialty Care, located in Chariton, Iowa. Leo was born on April 20, 1924 to Ray and Grace Sellers at their home in Russell, Iowa. He grew up in Russell and graduated from the Russell High School.
He married Dorothy Shrader on December 25, 1943 in Princeton Missouri. They had two daughters, Linda Lea and Sandra Kay, who passed away at three days old. Leo worked for Lucas County on the bridge crew for a few years. At that point in their lives, they lived in Williamson, Iowa. They later moved to Russell to begin farming. Leo loved farming and was the first one there when a neighbor needed a helping hand. He later worked part-time, for the City of Russell.
Leo and Dorothy enjoyed working on the farm together. In their relaxing time, they liked to play cards, square dance, camping, and listen to country music. Besides farming, Leo’s hobby was horses. He always had some on the farm to ride. In his younger years, he trained and broke horses to ride. He was lucky to have only one broken shoulder, when a lively stallion decided he was the most stubborn and Leo found himself on the ground.
Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, of 72 years; his infant daughter, Sandra Kay; his parents, Ray and Grace Sellers; his twin brother, Cleo Sellers; his brothers, Carl and Clell Sellers, and his sister, Thelma McKray.
Leo is survived by his daughter, Linda (Jack) Christensen of Chariton, Iowa; two grandchildren, Stacie (Kyle) Hardin of Chariton, Iowa and Chad (D.J.) Christensen of Afton, Iowa; five great grandchildren, T.J. (Mackinzie Welch) Hardin, Dustin (Jessica Love) Hardin, Brett Hardin, Slade Christensen and Cassie Christensen; two great great grandsons, Kasen and Khyler Hardin; brother-in-law, Ted Shrader; sister-in-laws, Helen Shrader of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Barb Steinbach, Jan Shrader, and Irene Vincent, all from Chariton, Iowa; many nieces, nephews and close family friends.

Shirley Ann Edgington Obituary

 Shirley Ann Edgington was born on April 2, 1941 in Chariton, Iowa to Earl Benton Smith and Betha Marie (Wright) Smith. Shirley passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the Chariton Specialty Care Center located in Chariton, Iowa at the age of 76 years.
Shirley Edgington was a great lady. She loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great grandchildren, giving them love and hugs. She treasured the collection of pictures of her family members. Shirley and Ralph started their life together in Chariton. In later years, they had built a new home out on the farm, where Shirley loved to go out into the timber and cut wood. Shirley did a lot of canning and made her amazing homemade apple butter in which her grandkids still brag about today.
Shirley would help Ralph around the farm doing the chores. Sometimes, she was a bit unsure of herself, but helped him anyway. Gerald, her oldest grandson, enjoyed the times spent on the farm with them. She cherished her time helping raise her grandson, Christopher.  She had tons of fun stories to tell about her adventures with Christopher. One time, she and Christopher was rocking in a rocking chair and the chair ended up tipping over. She would always ask him if he remembered the rocking chair incident. Another great memory, was when she went on a motorcycle ride with her son-in-law, Terry. She decided to take the ride with curlers still in her hair. Unfortunately, only a few curlers made it back home with her after the ride. Shirley enjoyed going snowmobiling with her friends and took great pleasure in her family vacations.
During the summer months, Shirley, absolutely loved  going to the Iowa State Fair and camping. Eventually, Ralph and Shirley moved from their farm to a small acreage to be closer to town, which lead them back to Chariton. Shirley and her daughter, Cindy delighted in their shopping trips and searching out treasured bargains. Shirley was dedicated in her quest for bargains as she relished hitting all the rummage sales. She was always up for a good deal and loved shopping with family to see what they could find. She adored going out in the yard to watch the great grandkids having their Easter egg hunt. Shirley had a beloved dog named Sammy. Sammy was near and dear to her heart.  She thought of him as an adopted four-legged a child and oh boy, was she spoiled rotten. Up until Sammy’s last days, Shirley would feed her a hotdog each day, which made for an extremely happy dog. Shirley loved having company over to the house and she especially would love if you showed up with a shake or turnover to be given to her. There were so many magnificent aspects of Shirley’s endearing personality, that makes it difficult to just pick a few. She will be greatly missed for everything she was to all of us, although the memories left with us, will forever be dearly cherished.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Betha Smith; her sister, Barbara Irene Smith; her brothers, Earl Benton, Jr., Delbert Lee, Ronald Charles, and Lester Dean Smith. She is survived by her husband, Ralph of Chariton, Iowa; her daughters, Cindy (Terry) Gall of Chariton, Iowa and Tammy ( Tony) Dahms of Dixson, Iowa; her grand-children, Gerald (Vena) Gall, April (James) Green, T.J. (Maggie) Gall and Christopher (Kelsey) Dahms; her great grand-children, Nathan, Tate, Ashlynn, Payton, Scarlette, Cale, and Emerson; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Larry Alexander Obituary

 Larry Alexander, 80, of Russell passed away on January 8, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Larry was born on October 9, 1937 to L.R. and Verna (McMurry) Alexander in Runnells, Iowa. Larry attended grade school at country school and graduated from Corydon High School with the class of 1955. Larry married Patricia Witt and to this union two daughters were born: Deborah and Laura. They later divorced and Larry then married Anna Cook on April 18, 1964 at the Chariton Christian Church. Larry and Ann had two children: Craig and Sue.

Larry worked for Brenaman and Sons Trucking and loved driving coast to coast. He and Ann moved to the farm in 1971 and there they ran a dairy herd, did row crop and hay. He started Alexander Construction in 1985 and worked until his retirement in 2006. Larry and Ann traveled all over the US and spent many winters in Texas. He enjoyed working outdoors, reading, traveling, working livestock and ground; he always said we should leave the land in better condition than what it was when we received it, and he never missed his 3 p.m. coffee break at the Millerton Café.

Survivors include his wife Ann, daughters: Deborah Mikell (Ron), Laura Becker, Sue Haack (Rich), son Craig Alexander (Karna), grandchildren: Lisa Bartlett (Jeff), Scott Mikell, James Mikell (Iliyana), Michael Alexander, Jeffery Alexander, Landon Haack, Colten Haack, 6 great grandchildren, brothers: Richard Alexander (Lena) and Robert Alexander, sister-in-law Joan Steinbach and numerous nieces, nephews, family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Leonard Alexander Jr., sister Dorothy Alexander, brothers-in-law: Roy Cook and Tom Steinbach and sister-in-law Leah Cook.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Interment will immediately follow at Confidence Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, January 12, 2018 with family present from 5-7 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Russell Volunteer Fire Department and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com.

Loudene Janet Penney Obituary

Loudene Janette (Hull) Penney, 88 years of age, passed from this earthly home January 6, 2018 at Corydon Specialty Care.

She was born May 15, 1929, on the family farm south of Russell.  She was the only child of Harvey and Emma (Schumann) Hull. She attended country school where she graduated at 8^th grade; then continued her education at Russell Community School, where she graduated in 1947.  She married Lee Clanin March 6, 1949.  Three children were born to this union: Bryant Edward, Sandra Lee and Paul Wade.  Lee passed away November 9, 1954.  Loudene married William H. Penney December 27, 1958.  Three children were born to this union: Jacqueline Sue, Janice Marie and Julia Ann.

She was a lifelong resident of Russell and homemaker until her children graduated school.  She worked as a waitress for Sarah Relph early in her life and cleaned houses for several Russell families, the First State Bank and Methodist Church in Russell and was a caregiver at Tenco for several years.  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1984 and Lifetime Member of the 12^th Armored Division Association, a member and faithful volunteer of the Faith United Methodist Church, Russell Community School Board member and helped as a volunteer with many other organizations.

She is survived by her 6 children: Bryant (Lesa) Clanin of PawPaw, Ill.; Sandra (Phillip) Young of Ashton, ID; Paul (Marcia) Clanin of Fairfield, IA; Jackie (Ron) McCaslen of Millerton, IA; Janice (Tom) Reddy of Chesapeake, VA;  Julia (Mike) Donahue of Waukee, IA; a special daughter Kathleen (Mike) Brandon of Chariton, IA; 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchild.  She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and 1 grandson.

Robert "Bob" McCurdy Obituary

 Robert “Bob” McCurdy, of Russell, passed away January 4, 2018 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Bob was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on August 8, 1932 to W.E. (Red) McCurdy and Chloe Elizabeth Gross McCurdy. He married Sharon Robuck, June 3, 1961 in Attica, Iowa. To this union, four children were born: David, Michael, Mark, and Kimberly.

Bob believed that education was extremely important and demonstrated this in his career choice. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School, received his bachelor’s degree from William Penn University, attended Drake University to achieve his Master’s Degree, and earned a Specialist Degree in Education from Drake University.

Bob served two years in the armed forces, stationed in Germany. He began teaching in Attica, Iowa, at the Twin Cedars School System for four years. He moved to Newhall, Iowa, teaching an additional four years. He then moved to Monroe, Iowa, where he was the principal at the high school for nearly 20 years. He advanced to Clearfield, Iowa, where he was superintendant for one year before moving to Russell in 1985. He was superintendant in Russell until his final retirement in 2008. He also served as interim superintendant for Fremont, Lineville/Clio, Mormon Trail, and a semester as the middle school principal in the Chariton School District.

He was a member of many organizations that were special to him over the years. These included the Russell Lions Club, The Russell Community Club, Lucas County Retired Teachers Club, The Lucas County Democrats, and the Russell American Legion. He also served on the Russell City Council and one term as Mayor.

Bob enjoyed traveling and had visited all states except Hawaii. He especially sought out locations with historic significance. He also was an avid sports fan having played semi-pro baseball and competitive bowling. Bob also coached football, basketball, and baseball from little league through the collegiate level. His favorite teams were the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Seahawks, Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones, and above all the William Penn Statesmen.

He is survived by his wife Sharon of 56-1/2 years; Son Michael (Terri) of Russell; Son Mark (Amy) of Russell; Daughter Kimberly Moyle (Jeremy) of West Des Moines; Eight grandchildren: Samantha and Stephen (Kourtney) McCurdy; Kaitlyn, Kelly, Joseph, and David McCurdy; Tyler and Bailey Moyle; One great-grandson, Carson McCurdy; Sister Alta Beatrice Williams of Ft Meyer, FL; Brother Donald (Nancy) of West Des Moines; Sister-in- law Susan McCurdy of Ankeny.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, a 3-year-old son David McCurdy, brother John McCurdy, brother-in-law Gerald Williams, and an infant granddaughter, Alexa McCurdy.

Services will be Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at The Faith United Methodist Church in Russell. Family will receive friends on Friday, January 12th from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to the Russell Volunteer Fire Department or the Russell Faith United Methodist Church.

Twyla M. Cromer Obituary

Twyla Marie Cromer, 87, passed away December 23, 2017 in Chariton, Iowa. Twyla Marie Cromer was born January 5, 1930 to Isaac Merrill Malone and Boonie Marline (Clark) Malone near Osceola, Iowa. They moved to Lucas County where Twyla started school at Goshen Schools. When Twyla was 6 years old they moved to Derby. When she was 12 years old they moved to Chariton where Twyla graduated from Chariton High School in 1948. Twyla married Chuck Robinson in 1950. She went on to work at Roush’s Drug Store in 1955 and later to work at Littett’s Drug Store on the west side of the square. Twyla worked there until her retirement in 1992. In 1979 Chuck Robinson died at the age of 54 from complications of childhood diabetes. In 1982 Twyla married Bud Cromer and moved to an acreage in Russell. Bud worked as a janitor a the Russell Schools. In 1997 Twyla went to work at the Senior Center as a janitor. After 5 years she went to work at Chariton Manor with the Activities Department. After 1 ½ years she decided to retire for good. In 2008 Bud’s health turned so they moved to Friendly Acres in Chariton. Twyla was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Chuck Robinson, husband Bud Cromer and sister Inez Quinn. Left to cherish her memories are brothers Dean Malone, Max Malone, sister Fern Baze as well as many other family and friends that loved her and will miss her deeply.

Pam Canady Obituary

Pamela Sue Canady, age 70 died December 11, 2017 at her home in Corydon, Iowa surrounded by people she loved.

Pam was born April 27, 1947 in Ames, IA joining brothers, Chuck, Cal and Paul to Paul Canady and Marjorie “Marni” (Reynolds) McCarty. Kris Stanley though not by blood, was also considered by Pam to be her brother. She attended Gilbert High School where she excelled at track and basketball. There she met Chuck Arnold. Chuck and Pam married in the summer of 1972 and had two sons: Brad J. (Sewal, IA) and Chad D. (Islamorada, FL).
Pam attended AIB College of Business and worked in a clerical position. She also managed and later owned a grocery and hardware store in Russell, IA.

In 1999 she married Randy Sloan, welcoming Tara, Cade, LeeAnn and Ray into her life and becoming a grandmother to their children.

Pam loved water skiing with her brothers and friends on Crown Lake; it was not unusual for them to form a row of skiers. She also loved growing plants and flowers which adorned her walkway and porch at their home in Russell that she and Randy designed together. Pam always wanted to be outside; on the open road in the motor home with Randy, camping and boating with her family or sitting on her patio drinking a glass of ice tea.

Pam played a great role in the lives of her grandchildren and had a part in helping to raise some of them. Her love was shown in the countless hours that they fed the squirrels, played board games and made Chex mix. She had patience and strength beyond measure.

In the fall of 2016 Pam and Randy moved to Corydon to finish out their retirement closer to their children. These plans were cut far too short by the grips of cancer.

Pam is survived by her husband Randy Sloan, children: Chad Arnold and Brad (Holly) Arnold, Tara Spidle (Carl), Cade Sloan, LeaAnn Millizer (Steve), Ray Sloan and Shelli Thompson, 12 grandchildren, brothers Cal Canady and Paul Canady (Karen), aunt Dorothy Reynolds and numerous other extended family members and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Chuck Canady, step son Jeff Thompson, and step father Don McCarty.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at the Corydon United Methodist Church.

Richard Duane Foland Obituary

Richard Duane Foland, of Russell, passed away December 5, 2017 at the age of 81. Services will be held Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends following the service.

Richard Duane Foland, son of Floyd Harlan and Elsie Luella (Glazebrook) Foland, was born at home in Grand River, Iowa on September 16, 1936. He died on December 5, 2017 at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa at the age of 81.

Richard left home at a young age and settled in Lucas County where he worked as a hired hand for area farmers. He graduated from Lucas High School in the Class of 1955.

Richard was married to Avon McDonald on March 15, 1958. To this union, three daughters were born: Kim, Karen and Kellie. On December 6, 1975, Richard was joined in marriage to Charlene Mason. He became a proud dad to her two children, Becky and Kenny.

Richard was employed at the Chariton Wholesale where he worked for over 42 years, traveling many miles to deliver groceries. Much of Richard’s leisure time was spent traveling as well. Richard loved to fish, often in local farm ponds, but he made several fishing trips to Canada and Bennett Spring. He loved country music and made annual trips to Branson. Richard traveled when he was able, going camping and to rodeos, even to Hawaii. One of his favorite trips was to Alaska.

Richard loved playing cards, especially Pitch and Cribbage with friends. Wherever he went, he never knew a stranger. Going to breakfast with friends was a daily ritual that he enjoyed as long as he could. His dog, Muffy, was one of his dearest friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 42 years, Charlene Foland of Russell; daughter, Karen Fitzgerald of Perry; daughter, Becky (Rick) Vander Linden of Knoxville; daughter, Kellie Abrahamson of Chariton; son, Kenny (Kari) Mason of Marshall, MO; 11 grandchildren: Chad (Tammy) Krutsinger, Brianne Foland (Bruce Bennett), Alicia (Ray) Hamann, Brandon (Jessica) Fitzgerald, Rechelle (Mike) Gamble, Chelsea Drilling, Hilary (Cole) Braaksma, Raegan McFarland, Jamie Holmes, Sydnee Mason, and Taylor Mason; 16 great grandchildren; brother, Larry Heater of Burlington; sister, Marylou Terry of Morning Sun; brother, John Hester of Fairborne, OH; brother, Jimmie (Pegge) Foland of Fairborne, OH; brother, Larry (Beth) Foland of Fairborne, OH; brother, Gary (Peggy) Foland of Sebring, FL; and brother, Eddie Wayne (Cathy) Foland of Fairborne, OH; and special friends, Keith and Shirley Kent and family.

Clare Burdette Davis Obituary

 Services for Clare Burdette Davis, 84, of Russell will be Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Interment will follow at the Russell Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday, prior to the service at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Russell Public Library or the Russell Fire Department.
Clare Burdette Davis passed away on November 25, 2017 at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown.Clare Burdette Davis was born December 16, 1932 to Howard Leroy and Mary Clanin Davis at his grandparent’s home in rural Russell, Iowa. He was raised in Russell alongside his sisters, Ethel and Mary Alice, and attended Russell High School.

Clare served in the United States Army from April of 1953 until April of 1955. He was stationed in Korea after the war. Clare was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, a Korean Service Medal, a United Nations Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal.

Farming was always a love of Clare’s. At one time he owned a small farm, but most of his farming experience was as a farmhand for area farmers. Clare loved to drive trucks. His driving career started while he was stationed in Korea where he drove a supply truck. After returning home he drove for various truck lines over the years, including: Russell Produce, the Stone brothers of Chariton, Werner, and he retired from Brooks. Clare was proud of the fact that he drove in all of the 48 mainland states and he never failed to mention that he drove in Washington, D.C.

Clare was an avid reader all of his life. He would read anything, from an encyclopedia, to one of his favorite western stories. He was the proud owner of a 1953 John Deere 70. There was a time when he used the tractor to pull a roller for the City of Russell. Clare served on the Russell City Council for eight years and was a proud member of the Russell American Legion.

In the later years, Clare really enjoyed visiting with friends over a cup of coffee at The Last Chance in Russell. He had a very dry sense of humor and a quick response for everything. The staff at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown really enjoyed getting to know Clare and considered him a favorite patient.

Clare is survived by his children: Juanita (Richard) Hanson, Robert (Karen) Davis, Mary Davis, Janet (Ed) Davis-Savich, and Linda Davis; sisters, Ethel (Weston) Laing and Mary Alice Davis; nephew, John (Sheila) Laing; great niece, Amy Laing; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, Howard and Mary Davis; and his daughter, Minda Davis.

Halleen McKay Obituary

 Halleen Ruby McKay, 95, of Russell, Iowa passed away November 21, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. She was born October 31, 1922 in Brighton, Iowa to William and Mary Curtis (Turner) DeWolf, the youngest of 5 children.
She attended school in Brighton, Iowa before marrying Everette McKay on May 15, 1940. To this union they raised five children; Roger, Mildred, Ronny, Marilyn and Rita.
Halleen and Everette farmed in the Washington, Iowa area before moving to Russell, Iowa in 1951. She was a hardworking housewife, helping with the farming, had a large garden, raised and dressed chickens, baby-sat for grandchildren, great-grandchildren and always had big meals on the table. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, flowers, animals and going to the Iowa State Fair.  She loved Christmas and always made lots of homemade candy.
Halleen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Everette, son Roger and grandson Kevin.  Also two brothers, Orie DeWolf and Harold DeWolf; two sisters Opal Lemley and Cecil Hesseltine.
She is survived by children Mildred (John) Guffey of Carlisle, Iowa, Ronny (Patty) McKay of Chariton, Iowa, Marilyn (Butch Vanderpool) Trenary of Chariton and Rita McKay of Russell, Iowa.  Grandchildren Dennis Guffey, Michael Guffey, Diana Abrahamson, Susan Gustafson, Brian Trenary, Rodney Mumford, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild Lilly.

Bernard Blubaugh Obituary

 Bernard Eugene Blubaugh, 79 of Valeria, died Friday, November 17, 2017, at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen, Texas from complications of acute leukemia. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Janice (Reynolds) Blubaugh; daughters, Cindy Blubaugh, Kathy (Pete Bowen) Hale, and Lisa Blubaugh; grandchildren, Trevor (Lyndsay) Neuendorf, Courtney Neuendorf, Blake (Kelsey) Hale, Natalie Hale and Brian Blubaugh; sister, Sharon Blubaugh; brothers, Leo (Pat) Blubaugh, Robert (Mariann) Blubaugh, and James (Judy) Blubaugh as well as several nieces, nephew and a whole lot of friends. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Teresa Ann (Blubaugh) Neuendorf.
Bernard was born to Fred and Agnes Blubaugh in Melrose, Iowa. He attended Russel High School and then following graduation served for four years in the United States Air Force. After serving his country, he married his high school sweetheart, Janice. They raised their family in Valeria, Iowa and after 30 year retired from Maytag.
Bernard always loved to brag to everyone about his children and grandchildren. He also loved helping local farmers, finding any excuse he could to go to Hy-Vee to gab with everyone and giving his friends a hard time. Summers he and Janice spent as much time as possible camping at state parks and loved camping at the Iowa State Fair. The last 14 winters, they spent in San Benito, Texas at Fun-n-Sun RV Resort, where they were involved in many different activities.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax. Burial with Military Rites will take place at McKeever Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Friday, November 24, 2017 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the church. Richard "Bud" Cromer Obituary

 Richard Lee “Buddy” Cromer was born on March 10, 1934 to Harry Paul Cromer and Myrtle Helen (Arnold) Cromer in Chariton, Iowa.  Richard passed from this life, November 6, 2017 at the Circle of Friends Legacy Lodge located in Chariton at the age of 83 years.
Buddy grew up and attending school in the Chariton area. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1951 through 1955. He had met and married Marilyn Shuey, to this union six children were born, David, Dennis, Margie, Steven and twin boys, Ronald and Donald. January 2, 1982, Richard was joined in marriage to Twyla Malone and they resided in Chariton, Iowa. After the military, Buddy attended college for his Heating and Cooling certificate. He worked as a HVAC specialist at various establishments. Buddy was last employed with the Hy-Vee pharmacy as a medical delivery person, which he enjoyed very much as it kept him busy during his retirement.
In Buddy’s spare time, he took pleasure in woodworking, fishing, playing cards and playing board games with friends and family members.  Buddy was an avid mushroom hunter and would look forward to mushroom season each year. He appreciated going for lunch at the sale barn, tinkering with vacuums and other small motor contraptions, and shopping trips to Wal-mart were among his favorite past-times.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Cromer and Helen (Arnold) Cox; his sisters, Betty, June Duree, and Janice Burrell; and his uncle, Harly Davidson.
He is survived by his wife, Twyla Cromer of Chariton, IA; his children, David (Terri) Cromer of Mitchellville, IA, Dennis Cromer of Maine, Margie (Joe) Gorecki of Newton, IA, Steven (Michelle) Cromer of Des Moines, IA, Ronald (Kathy) Cromer of Chariton, IA, Donald (Debbie) Cromer of Lucas, IA; his brother, Tommy Charles Cromer; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A private family interment will take place in the Chariton Cemetery. A Celebration of Life dinner will be Saturday, November 18, 2017, from 1:00- 5:00 p.m., held in the Chariton Community Center next to the high school

Shirley Ann Dixon Obituary

 



Shirley Ann Dixon, 83, of Lakewood, CO, passed into eternity at home, in the presence of loving family members Tuesday October 17, 2017 at 2:20 PM. She passed in comfort and peace looking up to heaven through her skylight as if God Himself said, “Shirley, it is time to come home.”

She was born to the late Kenneth and Theo Woods, Nov. 14, 1934 in Russell, IA. She attended Russell Elementary and High School through the 9th grade. Shirley married Floyd Dixon in 1950, and they lived together in Russell, IA, before relocating to Lakewood, CO in 1978.

Shirley worked as secretarial assistant to her husband in his many contracting endeavors and as restaurant owner/manager for several years in both IA and CO.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Floyd Dixon, 2 sons, Richard Dixon and Brad Dixon of Lakewood, CO and grandson (whom she raised) Joshua Dixon of McKinney, TX. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Theo Woods, sister Alene Smith and granddaughter Angel Olsen.

A memorial/visitation will be held at the Belmar Church gymnasium at 460 S Kipling St, Lakewood, CO, Sunday October 22, 2017 3-5 PM. Drinks and food provided.
