Vinice Floy Goben Obituary

Vinice Floy (James) Goben, daughter of Effie Ruth (Grimes) and Walter Howard James, was born at home on April 16, 1923 in Pleasant Township, Lucas Co, Iowa. She was the second of nine children. Vinice died on August 22, 2015, at the Circle of Life Legacy Lodge Hospice in Chariton, Iowa, at the age of 92 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Vinice was raised in Russell graduating from Russell High School in 1941. Following high school she was employed at Garden of Italy Restaurant, Des Moines. She received her teaching certificate from Simpson College and taught school in Lucas and Warren Counties from 1942-45.

Vinice and Edward Rolland Goben were acquainted while working at the NYA Shop in Chariton in 1941. They were married on July 7, 1943, in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, by Judge E. Tucker. Vinice followed Ed while he was stationed in U.S. Army to Washington, Louisiana and Texas.

After the war, the couple lived in Waterloo for a short time before settling in Lucas where they raised three daughters: Sheryl Floy, Carol Sue, and Cindy Lou. An infant son was stillborn.

In retirement, they lived in Branson, Missouri for twenty years. The couple returned to Lucas County in 2005, leaving behind many special friends, due to Vinice's health concerns.

Vinice was active in her childrens' lives in the Lucas school, 4-H, and the Lucas Presbyterian Church. She and Ed enjoyed camping, volunteering for the John L. Lewis Museum in Lucas, participating in the Chariton Valley Archery Club, Chariton C.B. Club and traveling to trapping conventions throughout the Midwest.

Vinice was preceded in death by her stillborn son; her parents; sisters, Cleva Barnes and Ida Lewis; and brother, Ralph James. Left behind are her husband, Ed Goben; daughters: Sheryl (Bruce) Taylor, Carol (Barry) Foust, and Cindy (Joe) Sellers; five grandchildren: Robin (David) Keeton, Amanda (Eddie) Rosado, Aaron (Jacci) Taylor, Alison (Bill) Evans, and Katie (Austin) Fiala; twelve great grandchildren; sisters, Bertha (Gary) Weber of Woodward and Rose (Kenneth) Sytsma of Knoxville; brothers: Arden James of Knoxville, Lyle (Wanda) James of Knoxville, and Lloyd James of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Carmen Goben of Woodburn; brother-in-law, Jack Lewis of Indianola; and very special nieces, nephews and old friends.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 in the Goshen Cemetery near Derby where Vinice will be laid to rest beside her infant son. Loran Whitlatch, hospice volunteer, will lead the graveside service. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton.

Memorial funds received by family will be directed to the Goshen Cemetery signage fund, the Lucas Presbyterian Church and Circle of Life Hospice/Legacy Lodge in Chariton.

Carl G. Riley Obituary

Carl was born in Russell, Iowa on February 4, 1929. Carl moved to San Francisco with his mother Margaret VanNise as a young boy at the beginning of the depression. Carl grew up in California and when of age he joined the Navy. Shortly after his time serving in the Navy Carl found himself back in Iowa and met his future wife. Marilyn Veenstra married Carl Riley on November 30, 2015. To this union three children were born John, Carl and Terry. Carl drove in the trucking industry for 35 years for different employers. Fond family memories were made when the Riley’s would go traveling in their RV. Some of the places they enjoyed most were Florida, Texas and New England. Carl had a funny sense of humor. He liked to garden and enjoyed fishing. Carl and Marilyn spent their retired days wintering in Texas and also attended the Presbyterian Church in Chariton. 

Carl was preceded in death by his mother; son Carl and daughter Terry; siblings: Helen, Nel, Gail and Tom; infant siblings: Margaret and Dale. 

Left to honor Carl’s memory are his wife Marilyn, son John; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Mildred Lucile (Cook) Long

Mildred Lucile (Cook) Long

Mildred, also affectionately known as “Cookie” or “Millie”, was born in Lucas Co, IA, on Oct. 25, 1925, the third child of Mary Malissa (Smith) and Tillman Leroy Cook. They lived NW of Chariton, where Mildred’s father farmed for the land owner. Mildred went to country school through the 2nd grade when they moved into Chariton, where she attended Columbus School and Alma Clay School. 

Mildred was in the 8th grade when she met her future husband: Russell M. Long; they were married several years later, in Princeton, MO, March 14, 1942. WWII separated them shortly after their marriage, when Russ went into the Army and then went overseas. Mildred lived with his mother for a time while he was away. 

Later she shared an apt. with her friend Edna, as they followed their Army buddy husbands. Mildred and Edna both worked to keep busy and earn some money. They remained life-long friends. After the war, Mildred & Russ lived in Co., and then moved back to IA., where their four children were born and raised: Judi, Sandy, Connie, and Steve. 

Mildred & Russ attended church when they were invited to worship with some friends. They joined the First Baptist Church in Chariton, and their faith in Jesus became very important to them as they attended church and Sunday school with their family. Both Mildred and Russ taught Sunday school classes for many years. Even though they later moved to Russell, they continued driving to Chariton for church services and activities for many years. Later they joined the First Baptist Church in Russell, where they remained active members until his death in 1996. They were married almost 54 years. In April, 2001, Mildred moved to WI to make her home with daughter Connie and her husband, Leon Cochran. She entered nursing home care in Pepin in 2011, where she was “promoted to Glory”, as one pastor liked to say, on August 13, 2015. 

Mildred’s many homemaking skills included cooking, reading, sewing, crocheting, flower and vegetable gardening. These skills served her well as she raised her family. She and Russ both worked hard to make a good home and provide for the family they loved so much. They willingly shared their home with his mother, her father, their nephew, at various times. Mildred learned new skills while in WI, as she helped in the church office where Connie was the office administrator. She loved helping at home, too, and spending time with her granddaughters and friends. 

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and husband; sisters: Mabel Edwards, Lila Capehart, Marge Beaman; brother: Jack Cook, granddaughter Lori Swarthout, and son in law, Leon Cochran. 

She is survived by daughters: Judi (Jerry Huseman), Sandy (Bob Brown), Connie Cochran, son, Steve (Kellie) Long, grandchildren: Teri Swarthout (Steve Huwe), Tracey (Scott) Johnson, Suzanne (Barrett) Hanson, Kristina (Kenny) Vakoc, Jodie (Lynn) Seifert, Jennifer (David) Alsum, Julie (Philip) Stegemann, step-grandson, Chris (Hannah) Querrey, great-grandchildren: Lacey Geer, Paige Johnson, Lily and Kaylee Stegemann, step-great-grandchildren: Cheyenne Hanson, Ryan, Emily, and Evan Seifert, Cahde, Callahn, Cohler, and Cahble Querrey, two great-great-grandchildren: Ajay Geer, Shaye Lee Price. 

Mildred is also survived by her sister: Nellie Stackhouse; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Connie Louise (Long) Ansley, oldest child of Leland and Geneva Long was born February 2, 1946 at Yocom Hospital at Chariton Iowa. Connie spent her childhood and grew up in Lucas County. 

Connie accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and served him daily. Connie attended Chariton Bible Church as a young girl with her family, in later years attended Grace Baptist Church. 

Connie graduated from Chariton High School in 1964; she went on to work at O’Donnell Nursing Home in Russell, Iowa and the Chariton Manor. 

On July 1, 1968 at the Princeton, Missouri Baptist Church Connie was united in marriage to Olen Medearis. Olen shared within this union his three beautiful children; Debbie, Judy, and Kenny. Connie loved these three as her own. Olen and Connie were then blessed with the birth of their daughter, Marci Sue. Olen and Connie enjoyed riding their Harley Davidson motorcycle all over the countryside. They were joyfully married for 27 years. Olen was called home on May 17th 1996. 

On June 13, 1997 Connie was united in marriage to Edward Ansley in Chariton, Iowa. They spent 16 years enjoying nature at Lazy Days Ranch in Melrose, Iowa. To this union Ed brought a bonus daughter Lynn, whom Connie also loved as her own. Ed preceded Connie in death on September 13, 2013. 

Connie was also preceded in death by her Father, Leland Long, her Brother, Donnie Long and her brother-in-law Gordie Henry. 

Connie is survived by her Mother Geneva Long; sisters Linda Henry, Jeanne (Russ) Johnson, Brenda (John) Collins; brothers Lee (Debi) Long, Ken (Janet) Long, Brian (Connie) Long and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. 

Also survived by her children Marci (Brian) Ruff, Deb (Dan) McGee, Judy Kinsey, Ken (Nasbelle) Medearis. Grandchildren Ammie Ruff, Troy Ruff, Jenci Ruff, Grahm Ruff, Leslie (Kofi) Lawer, Brandon (Lindsay) McGee, Kyle Kinsey, Cole Kinsey, Lacey Medearis. Great grandchildren Steven Thome, Alyssa Thome, Patience Ruff, Raina Ruff, Chandler Bainbridge, Remington Kern, Cortlan Bainbridge, Gibson McGee, Griffin McGee, Kaden Kinsey, Mya Kinsey. 

During the last few months of her life, Connie met Don Crooks and spent quality time together and enjoyed each other’s company.

Dorothy Helena Sellers Obituary

Dorothy Helena Sellers was born September 27, 1923 in Russell Iowa to Guy and Roxie (McFarland) Shrader. Dorothy attended school in Russell, Iowa at the Russell Community Schools where she spent her childhood years and graduated. Dorothy attended Simpson College to obtain her teaching certificate. She married Leo M. Sellers in Princeton, Missouri on December 25, 1943. As a newly-wed she taught at the Liberty Township country school and not shortly after, their daughter Linda was born. 

Dorothy enjoyed accomplishing many domestic activities as her role shifted from teacher to house maker. She enjoyed baking, canning goods and sewing her daughter’s outfits all the way to her high-school years. Their home had all the makings of a country life-style raising animals from chickens to the farm cats and dogs. On top of all of the things Dorothy accomplished as a homemaker she loved to garden. She truly took pride in her flowers and had a very large garden to show for it. Giving back to the community Dorothy volunteered time with a Ladies group in the Russell Methodist Church. Dorothy also helped take care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She offered herself up as “second-mom” and loved to do so. 

Dorothy passed from this life on June, 14 2015 at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Cleo Shrader; sister JoAnn Jamieson; sister Rosebud Vincent and infant daughter Sandra Kay. 

She is survived by her husband Leo M. Sellers; daughter Linda (Jack) Christensen of Chariton; grand-daughter Stacie (Kyle) Hardin; great-grandchildren T.J., Dusty and Brett Hardin and great-great- grandson Kasen Hardin, all of Chariton; grand-son Chad (D.J.) Duane M. Goltry Obituary

Duane M. Goltry 84, of Russell, Iowa passed away June 4, 2015 at Circle of Life Hospice Legacy Lodge from complications of pneumonia. A visitation with family present will be from 6:00 – 8:00 on Monday, June 8, 2015 at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. A celebration of Duane’s life will be held at 1:30 on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Fielding Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Russell Cemetery. 

Duane was born on the Goltry Century Farm east of Russell on February 13, 1931 to Carl Thomas and Stella Mae (Moore) Goltry. Duane’s youth was spent keeping his mother busy with boyhood shenanigans conspired with his Cousin Bob Johnson, attending Victory country school, helping his father and Uncle Wright Goltry raise livestock and work the farm with horses, and graduating from Russell High School in 1950. He proudly served his country in the Air Force from 1952 thru 1956. His occupation during the Korean Conflict was working as an Air Craft Mechanic stationed in Japan. In addition to farming he was employed by the safety and security department at Hy-Vee Wholesale in Chariton, Iowa for 16 years. Duane had a great passion for the Iowa State Fair and was an avid basketball enthusiast, particularly Iowa State. You may have seen Duane driving his 1930 Model A or his pony, Wolfie with his granddaughter Jessica by his side at many parades. 

Duane married Sandra Fogle on November 11, 1956 in Chariton, Iowa. The couple lived on the Goltry homestead where they raised their two daughters and instilled honesty, integrity, work ethics, and pride that have been practiced by their ancestors. Their two daughters, Linda and Lisa cherish how important family was to him. 

Duane is survived by his wife Sandra of Chariton, Iowa; daughters Linda (David) Secor of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Lisa (Curtiss) Koenig of Sloan, Iowa; granddaughter Jessica (Brandon Meyer) Koenig of Sloan, Iowa; sister Jean Cooper of Rockford, Illinois; sister-in-law Pat Lindeman of Russell, Iowa; several step-grandchildren, one niece, one nephew, and cousins. 

He was proceeded in death by his parents; infant brother Harold Dean Goltry; brother-in-laws Jim Cooper and Keith Lindeman; nephew Jim T Cooper: and several uncles, aunts, and cousins. 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Russell (Iowa) Historical Society in Russell, Iowa.

Burdette L. Thompson Obituary

Burdette L. Thompson, 78 of Des Moines, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. Burdette Lee Thompson was born October 15, 1936 in Lucas county near Russell , Iowa to Merwyn L. Thompson and Leona M. (Gilbert) Thompson. Burdette started his school days at Victory School, the same country school his Father and Grandfather Thompson attended. During the third grade his family moved to a farm west of Russell, IA and attended the Russell, IA schools. Burdette graduated from Russell High School in 1955. During high school he was active in music, played the trumpet and participated in many activities. He belonged to Lucas County 4-H and showed dairy cows winning many awards. 

He became a member of the Russell Methodist Church in April 1950. Always active in the church, he taught Sunday school classes and played piano for the church. He enjoyed playing his trumpet in the Russell Marching band and the Town band. He was first encouraged to start playing in the band by his great uncle. He played with the band even after returning from college. 

Burdette attended Iowa Wesleyan College. He returned to Lucas County and was active in many organizations, such as the Young Republicans and the Methodist Church activities. He moved to Chariton in 1958 and was employed by the J.C. Penney Co. Burdette was a member of the Chariton Jaycees, Chariton Masonic lodge #63 and belonged to the York Rite Bodies and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. He played the organ for many Masonic activities. Burdette then joined the P.M. Place stores to become a manager and moved to Centerville for a short time and then on to Ft. Madison before moving to Des Moines in January 1963. He worked for the P.M. Place Co. until 1965 managing their stores. Then he was employed by Zenith, 7-11 Corporations, City of Des Moines as a Trainer for the central Parking systems. In the 80’s he owned and operated Burdette’s Old Market and Grocery. He was always a retail manager, employing and training many people in sales. 

Burdette participated in many organizations after moving to Des Moines. He became a member of the Grace Methodist Church and the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet singing in America Inc. Burdette sang with the Des Moines chorus for over 25 years. He served as president of all chapters in the State of Iowa for over five years, and then served as Vice President of the organization in the seven state area of the Central States. He traveled as an officer, but found time to be the producer of their show at KRNT Theater for over ten years. 

He served for many years as a member of the Special Events Committee of the Iowa State Fair. He was master of ceremonies welcoming many musical groups and performers to the stage at the Bill Riley Talent Show. Burdette has enjoyed genealogy as a hobby for 50 years. In 1964, he was one of the 15 charter members in Iowa who founded the Iowa State Genealogical Society serving as the Vice President. He traveled extensively searching for his family heritage in several states and libraries before the use of the Internet. In the Lucas County section he has donated many articles of the Lucas County families. 

Burdette enjoyed people and kept in contact with many people across the country. He enjoyed music and teaching country line dancing throughout the Midwest. He had a great love for American history, especially about Iowa. 

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents, uncle Lester Gilbert of Colorado; aunt Marjorie Gilbert of Colorado; uncle Carl Post of Houstonm and uncle Cleo Thompson (Wilma) of Chariton, IA. 

Burdette is survived by his brother Dwight M Thompson and wife Helen of Chariton, IA, sister Lois A. Reynolds and husband George of Centerville, IA. Nephews and Nieces, Michael Thompson and wife Laura of Oak Park , IL, Emma and Cecilia Thompson; Brenda (Thompson) Nuckles and Husband Jeff of White Sands Missile Range, NM; Chelsea Stonehouse, Courtney Stonehouse and Jordan Nuckles; Teresa (Thompson) Quick of Des Moines, IA, Mackenzie, Olivia and Emily Quick; Shirley (Reynolds) Sloan and husband Don of Kansas City, MO; Richard Reynolds and wife Amanda of Centerville, IA and Jared Reynolds; Aunt Thelma Post of Houston, TX; cousins Beth Hammack (Jim) of Oklahoma City, OK; Kathleen Gilbert Macmillian (Stuart) of Denver, CO and Kent Gilbert (Beth) of Castle Rock, CO; Eva Decker of Chariton, IA; Jim Thompson of Illinois and many other cousins. 

Burdette never knew a stranger and was always thinking of others. He gave from the heart to all his family and friends. He loved his family dearly and loved family gatherings and sharing wonderful memories of family history. He will always be with us in heart! We love you!

Virginia Morgan Obituary

Virginia Morgan age 89 of Russell passed away on Thursday May 14, 2015. She was born on July 11th 1925 in Atchison, Kansas. She was married to Robert Morgan in 1947. To this union one daughter Peggy was born.
In her younger years she was involved in many local and county activities, having served on several boards. She was a long time member of Faith United Methodist Church in Russell and gave freely of her time in volunteer work.
She worked alongside her husband Bob in various businesses for over 35 years.
Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and had many friends of all ages.
Survivors include her beloved daughter Peggy, 3 grandchildren- tracy young, buck and Rod Conway, 5 great grandchildren- Dee, Mashala, Tristan, Morgan, and Cash.
Virginia is preceded in death by her husband Bob of 68 years whom passed away in Jan. 2015.
At Virginia’s request her body was cremated. Visitation will be from 10:30-11:30 on Monday May 18th, 2015 at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Private graveside services will follow visitation at Russell Cemetery with Emery McDonald officiating.

Ivan Gail McCullough Obituary

Ivan Gail McCullough, born February 25, 1931 in Garden Grove, IA, was the son of William “Guy” & Maude Hill McCullough. He passed away Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Legacy Lodge in Chariton, IA at the age of 84 years.

Ivan married Eleaine Evelyn Johnson of Leon, IA in 1950. They were parents of eight children: Arnan Gail, Allan Lynn, Calvin Lee, Jennine Kay, Kevin Guy, Galen Lyle, Maureen “Mo” Rose and Coleen Lois.

Ivan and Eleaine moved to Russell, IA, in 1954 where Ivan worked for Russell Produce Company. In 1964, they purchased an insurance agency from Walter and Mona Coop and together they operated McCullough Insurance Agency until it was sold in 1985. Ivan began his United States Postal Service career in 1965. He carried mail on a Russell rural route for 35 years, retiring in 2001.

While a Russell resident Ivan served terms as a city councilman and as mayor. He served as chairman of the of the Rathbun Regional Planning Commission, participating in the 1971 dedication of Rathbun Lake with Richard Nixon being the keynote speaker. In 1973 he was named the Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year for Lucas County. Ivan was a member of the Russell Faith United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Russell Lion’s Club.

Ivan acquired a couple of donkeys after he moved to Russell and began a long-time hobby of raising mules. He broke and sold many riding and jumping mules. After retirement from carrying mail, Ivan bought a van to haul several of his Amish friends to and from their work sites and appointments.

Preceding Ivan in death were sons Allan McCullough and Calvin McCullough, parents Guy and Maude McCullough, sisters and brothers-in-law Emily Eileen (Gerald) Smith, Lois Maude (Leroy) Orfield and Freda Gieula (George) Morgan; and brother-in-law Kenneth Herron.

Surviving are children, Arnan (Joanie) McCullough of Russell, Jennine (Steve) Rex of Enumclaw, WA, Kevin (Cindi) McCullough of Russell, Galen (Pam) McCullough of Chariton, Mo White of Chariton, Coleen (Steve Coffey) McCullough of Oskaloosa, IA and daughters-in-law Lois Jeffries of Russell and Leah McCullough of Hayden, ID.

Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren: Kimberly (Dylan) Erhart of Steamboat Springs, CO, Adam McCullough of Fort Collins, CO, Morgan McCullough of Chicago, Il, Megan (Mike) Arnold of Russell, Danielle (Travis) Miller of Rathdrum, ID, Michelle McCullough of Roundup, MT, Alissa McCullough of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Dan (Dea) Jacob of Eugene, OR, Kurt (Toni) McCullough of Chariton, Cody McCullough of Russell, Jeff McCullough of Grimes, IA, Emily McCullough of West Des Moines, IA, Brett White of Chariton and Tori White of Chariton; fourteen great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law LaNelle Herron of Chariton.

F. Josephine (Ford) Reed, 98, of Austin, TX. daughter of Dennis B. Ford and Sarah Catherine (Lodge) Ford died April 16, 2015. A graveside service will be held Friday. April 24. 2015 at 10:30 am at the Russell cemetery. 

Jo was born February 25, 1917 in Russell, IA, and graduated from Russell High School in 1934. She received her Bachelors Degree from Drake University. She taught school in many Iowa schools and also worked for Principal Financial. 

Jo married James I. Reed in August of 1938. They were married 61 years and had one son. (Andy) Laurel R. Reed who lives with his wife, Marvel in Ruidoso, NM. She was preceeded in death by her husband. parents, sisters, Phyllis Debok and Carmen Ford, brother. Ivan Ford . 

She is survived by her son and daughter in law, 3 grand children and 9 great grandchildren.

Lois LuVina (LaFavre) Werts, daughter of Trace Glenn LaFavre and Ethel LuVina Kleinbeck was born March 31, 1928, at Yocum Hospital in Chariton, IA. She passed away on February 13, 2015, at the Corydon Nursing and Rehab Center in Corydon, IA, at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 14 days. 

Lois graduated from Chariton High School in 1946. She taught country school for three years until she married Burdette Harvey Werts on June 20, 1948, at A Little Bit O’ Heaven in Davenport, IA. Lois and Burdette’s most proud moment was the birth of Brent Lee in 1954. When Brent was young, she worked for 8+ years at Woolworths in Chariton. Shortly after, Lois left Woolworths to become a full time homemaker for her husband, son and eventual grandkids. She stayed in the Chariton and Russell area her entire adult life. She was a member of the Russell Methodist Church, Millerton United Methodist Church, and Pythian Sisters group. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Evelyn LaFavre and husband, Russell Mikesell; in-laws, Harvey Roger and Artie Olive Werts; sister-in-law, Wilma Strait and husband William; brother-in-laws, Dean Werts and wife Ruth, Roger Werts and Dale Werts. 

Survivors include her husband of 66 years; son Brent and Judy Werts of Russell; grandchildren, Jana (Ryan) Rogness of Urbandale, IA, Brad Werts (girlfriend, Bridget Johnson) of Corydon, IA, Jayma (James) Sims of Burlington, IA, Brian Werts (fiancée Lauren Schenk) of Dekalb, IL; great grandchildren, Evan and Leona Rogness, Bryant and Braden Werts, and Juliana Sims. 

Lois showed her creativity through many areas including crafts, woodworking, painting, and sewing. Thirteen years were spent making many wedding and special occasion cakes. She enjoyed gardening and yard work and was known for keeping a clean house. Lois was a very giving person and took great pride in her grandchildren and their activities. Burdette and Lois spent 27 years traveling to Edinburg, TX, to Citrus Mobile Park from December to March. They also enjoyed going to Rathbun Country Music Theater for 35 years.

Juanita Fern Chamberlain, daughter of Robert Roy Grove and Lois Allene (Trimble) Grove was born on December 29, 1933 in Corydon, IA. She passed away February 2, 2015 at the Legacy Lodge Hospice at the age of 81. 

Nita attended schools in Millerton and Seymour, IA and graduated from Corydon High School in 1952. She married Sgt. Billy E. Clark on February 13, 1954 in Waynesville, MO. To this union four children were born: Robert Eugene, Cynthia Lynn, William Patrick and Terri Jo. 

Nita was baptized at the Methodist Church in Russell, IA. On January 30, 1962, she was united in marriage to Richard Royce Chamberlain. Three more children: Gary Raymond, John Richard and Steven Royce blessed this family. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert Allen; oldest son, Robert Eugene (Bobby), July 31, 1989, and son, John Richard Chamberlain, January 4, 2014; husband Richard, September 2, 1996; a niece, Donna Sue Askren; her brother-in-law, James Askren; and her grandparents.

Elwyn Eugene Mason of Russell, Iowa, age 85, born October 2, 1929, went to be with his Heavenly Father on January 24, 2015. Elwyn was the son of Ustel and Tena (Schumann) Mason of Russell. He lived in rural Russell from birth to 1950 and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1948. Elwyn enlisted in the United States Air Force, September 14, 1950, during the Korean War and was honorably discharged Feb. 25, 1954; his rank was Staff Sergeant and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Occupation Medal Germany. During his service time he served at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, Furstenfeldbruck, Germany and Bitburg, Germany.

After his discharge he returned to Russell; in 1954 he moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he was employed by Solar Aircraft Corporation. In 1955, he was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Des Moines. In 1971, the family moved back to the Russell area and built a new home near his parents home. After working 33 years with Goodyear, he retired in 1988. He worked part time at the Russell Oil Company until 2004. He was known, in town, as the best pizza maker around, although he followed the same recipe as did others who worked there.

November 18, 1955, he married Betty Cain, of Van Wert, Iowa, in Des Moines and to this union, two sons were born; Philip in 1957 and Kenneth in 1960. The family became members of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church. Elwyn was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion Charlie Clark Post #308 and was a past member of the Russell Community Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Maxine (Mason) Moore of Russell; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wallace (Bud) and Margreet (Marge) Cain of Van Wert, Iowa; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, LuEtta and David Wakefield of Grand River, Iowa.

Elwyn is survived by his loving wife, Betty, Russell, IA; sons, Phil (Shelley) Mason of Diagnal, IA and Ken (Deb) Mason of Russell, IA. Robert Morgan passed away at age 89. He was born February 8, 1925 in Mount Pleasant, IA. He was united in marriage to Virginia Paris in 1947. To this union, one daughter, Peggy was born.

Bob was a Navy Veteran of World War II. He was in business for over 35 years locally with the Russell Produce, Russell Grain Co. and Russell Mall. He was active in many local organizations and still serving as Finance Officer, until 2012, for the American Legion of which he was a lifetime member.

Bob was a great husband, father and grandfather. His generosity to those in need was known to most. He never had any ill will toward anyone and had the friendship of young and old.

At Bob's request, his body was cremated. A gathering of relatives and friends will be on Tuesday morning, January 27, 2015 from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. at Fielding Funeral Home. A burial with Military Rights will be at the Russell Cemetery following the visitation.

Memorials may be made to the Legacy Lodge and the Russell Rescue and Fire Department.

Jackie Ray “Jack” Meyer, 81, Obituary

Jackie Ray “Jack” Meyer, 81 of Fredericksburg, VA died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014 at Mary Washington Hospital.

Jack was raised on a farm 4 ½ miles South East of Russell, Iowa, on the Blue Grass Road. He accepted the Lord in his youth while under the ministry of Rev. Archie Beals at the First Baptist Church in Russell. He was active in basketball and the local 4-H club. After graduating from Russell High School in 1951 he joined the Navy and served there for four years during the Korean War as an electronics technician on board the aircraft carrier Shangri-La.

He was a graduate of Iowa State University in Electrical Engineering and served in the Minnesota State legislature from 1967 to 1969. He then became the Director of the Cincinnati Transit Authority for several years before moving to the Washington, DC area to serve on a number of electrical engineering projects as a civilian for the Walter Reed Hospital and the U.S. Navy. At the time of his retirement he was involved in solving electromagnetic interference problems on mine sweepers and guided missile cruisers.

Survivors include his wife, Betsey Ann Meyer, Two daughters, Deborah Meyer Burget (Craig} of Fairmont, W. VA., and Ruth Meyer (Matt Belval) of Vacaville, CA; son Benjamin Franklin Meyer (Michelle) of Evans, GA; two brothers, John Meyer of Chino Valley, AZ, and Robert E. Meyer of Sebring, FL; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Raymond Meyer, and his parents, Raymond E. Meyer and Florence A. Meyer, both of Russell, IA.

The family received friends the evening of Dec. 4, at Covenant Funeral Services, Fredericksburg, VA.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the Spotswood Baptist Church in Fredericksburg. Internment was held on Monday, Dec. 8, at the Quantico National Cemetery.

Rilla Fern (Church) Enterline Obituary

Rilla Fern (Church) Enterline was born October 13, 1930. She was called Home January 07, 2015. 

Fern, the daughter of Edgar and Twila (Wolverton) Church, was born in rural Derby, Iowa. She attended school at Cambria and Derby before attending and graduating from AIB with a degree in business. 

Fern married her husband, Boyd Saylor Enterline December 6, 1957, at the Lucas Assembly of God Church. To this union two sons were born: Edgar Eugene and Todd Alan. 

Fern traveled all over the country performing Bible School Programs that included chalk talks, object lessons, and “Rusty Doolittle”. She later pastored for many years at the Lucas Assembly of God church, until she retired in 1994. She and Boyd then attended different churches before settling at Center Community Church in Russell, Iowa, where Fern came out of retirement and pastored until the church closed in November of 2014. She was incredibly proud of the fact that she got to dedicate all six of her grandchildren to the Lord, and also performed three of the grandchildren’s wedding ceremonies. 

Fern will be remembered for many things. Among them, her love of her six grandchildren and their spouses, her great-granddaughter, her ventriloquism, her quirky ways, and of course none could forget her experimental cooking. Some of the best memories of her are her “do a dumb thing days”, her advice and her stories. 

Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Saylor Enterline; her parents Edgar and Twila Church; brothers Edgar Church Jr. and John Franklin Church; and sister Betty Jo Church. 

Fern will be remembered by her family, sons Edgar and wife, Rhonda Enterline, and Todd and wife, Mary Enterline, all of Chariton; grandchildren Rilla Enterline of West Des Moines, Kenny Enterline and wife, Shelby, of Lucas, Joshua Enterline, Tony Enterline and Robin Enterline, all of Chariton, Cody and wife, Tasha Enterline, of Derby; great-granddaughter Alivia Enterline; brother Larry and wife, Barbara Church, of Des Moines; nieces and nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Mary Lou Bingaman Obituary

Mary Lou Bingaman, 73, of Chariton passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Iowa Methodist
Medical Center in Des Moines.

Mary Lou was born to Charles and Eulice (Davis) Sims on May 8, 1941 in Marysville, Iowa. She attended elementary school in Marysville and graduated from Lovilia High School with the class of 1958. Mary Lou pursued a career in the travel industry, working for several different airlines and a travel agency. She retired in 1995 from American Airlines, where she made many longtime friends. 

Mary Lou was a fun person who enjoyed time spent with family and friends. She enjoyed having lunch with her friends and watching her grandkids sporting events. Friends may have known her as Mary Lou, but she will always be Momma Lou to her grandchildren. Laughter was never too far away when Mary Lou was in the area. Lunch dates with her friends always included laughing and giggling. She enjoyed mowing her yard with her zero turn lawn mower and walking around the farm. 

Survivors include her companion Dean Jones of Chariton, brother, Bob Sims of Russell, sister, Barbara Bauman of Cabool, Missouri and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Bingaman, sister, Betty Ann Sims, sister-in-law, Gwen Sims and a brother-in-law, Richard Bauman. 

A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton with Rev. Brent Hanna officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior form 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date in Weller Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Legacy Lodge in Chariton.

   Mary Madolene (Ballard) Amos was born January 8, 1932 in Humeston, IA. She left this world on November 27, 2014 to join family and friends in heaven. She was raised on a farm south of Chariton and resided in the Chariton area most of her life. After retirement in 2006; she moved to Des Moines to be closer to family. 

   She held various jobs including healthcare at Chariton Hospital and Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center. She was always working; whether it was inside or outside her home. Mary was a devoted mother and caregiver for her husband and several friends. Her house was always immaculate. She loved to bake and cook to share with others. She also enjoyed her flower gardens and a well kept lawn. 

   She was preceded in death by her parents; Charlie and Velma Ballard, her husband; Walter Amos, her sister; Darlene McFadden, her twin sister; Margaret Boston, brothers; Millard Smith and Skip Hellyer. Children; Judy Thompson, Lorilee Davis, Melvin Dwayne, Mary Louise, and Homer Boston.

   Guy L. Buttz, 88, of Russell went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 13, 2014.

   Guy was born to Homer and Julia (Kern) Buttz on June 30, 1926 in Confidence, Iowa. He lived near Confidence all his school years. On August 30, 1946, Guy was united in marriage to Evelyn LaFavre. They began their marriage by digging potatoes in North Dakota. To this union were born two children: Linda and Doyle.

   Guy loved to fish and hunt and would take trips all over with his family and friends in search of that big catch. There were trips to Alaska with Doyle and friends, trips with the grandkids to Washington Island, Puerto Rico, Mississippi, California and Canada. Guy also spent many opening weekends of deer season with family and friends rehashing tales from previous years and making a game plan for the upcoming drive.

   Guy loved his family and friends and spent his whole life helping and doing for others. He was known far and wide as Grandpa Guy. He was always around to give advice on how better to do something and then would fix things when you did it all wrong. He had a knack for fixing and building things and worked building four trailer parks in Ames and Huxley. While in Ames, Guy hauled snow for the city of Ames and even took tickets at Iowa State football games.

   Guy and Evelyn loved to travel and they traveled to almost every state...camping along the way. He spent several weekends over the years rodeoing with the grandsons and was their biggest fan. He had some of the best spots for mushroom hunting and would only trust a few close family members with the location of his secret spots. Guy could also be seen around Russell and Corydon and other local parades driving his model T. He was a survivor....He made it through rolling a tractor, flipping a skid loader, several car wrecks, a stroke, a ditch caving in, and a broken neck. A little bit of stubborn helped with this too. In his later years, he enjoyed watching the birds and wildlife from the window in his home and watching Iowa State Football on T.V.

   Guy was quite the early riser. He would get up early and tinker around in the garage, always just loud enough to ensure each of the kids would wake up to assist him in whatever project he was working on. 

   Guy was a member of the New Providence Baptist Church in Confidence. He was a long-standing deacon and trustee at the church and spent numerous hours working on the church and adjacent park. He was also dedicated to the Forest Lake Bible Camp in Ottumwa using his many talents, cutting wood and building an RV park.

   Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Evelyn Buttz of Russell, daughter Linda Johnson of Russell, son Doyle Buttz of Russell, three sisters: Velma Petty of Newton, Vera Peterson of Chariton, Donna (Tom) Beal of Curlew, Washington, six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Guy is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Julia Buttz, brother Leroy Buttz, brother-in-law Dale Peterson and son-in-law Don Johnson.

   Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday November 17, 2014 at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa with Pastor Alva Skiles and Donna Beal officiating. Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, November 16 at the funeral home. Interment was held in the Confidence Cemetery following services. Rebecca "Becky" Franck Obituary

   Becky, the daughter of Dale and Mary Lou (May) Johnson, was born Jan. 29, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa.  She grew up in Russell, Iowa and was a graduate of Russell High School.  She was united in marriage with Fred Franck on Aug. 22, 1969, in Russell.  She worked at Bandag for several years, where she was a marketing manager.  She enjoyed reading, traveling, gardening, computers, and spending time with her family.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James "Jim" Johnson and a sister, Nancy Johnson.

Vicki Jo Lockridge, age 62, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa, from complications of renal disease. Vicki was born July 25, 1952, in Chariton, Iowa, to Cecil H. and Audrey E. (Exley) Lockridge. At the age of 10, Vicki moved with her family to a farm north of Russell. Vicki was a graduate of Russell High School, Russell, Iowa, and Salvador's Beauty Academy, Des Moines, Iowa. 

Vicki owned and operated "The Lock Shoppe" salon in Chariton, Iowa, for over twenty years. Vicki took great pride in her work as a stylist, and had a very strong work ethic and close relationship with her clients. She especially loved to cut children's hair, and relished prom and graduation time. It was very important to her that her special clients looked beautiful, regardless of the occasion. 

Vicki was very well-known for her candor, and was not shy about speaking her mind. She was a generous person, and would do anything for a friend. She was a huge supporter of public education, and always encouraged her youthful clients to acquire the skills needed to follow their dreams. 

Vicki's two nieces, Erin (Lockridge) Johnson and Amy (Lockridge) Swigart were the apple of her eye. She was always supportive of their interests and educational goals. 

Preceeding Vicki in death were her parents, Cecil and Audrey (Exley) Lockridge, her grandparents, Adam and Beatrice (Merrill) Caylor, Alva Lockridge, and Claude and Verna (Troutman) Exley. Vicki is survived by her brother David (Gail) Lockridge, Russell, Iowa; nieces Erin (Wesley) Johnson, Ames, Iowa; Amy (Christopher) Swigart, State Center, Iowa; great nieces Abigail Johnson, Lucille Johnson, and Mya Swigart; great nephews Joseph Swigart and Kenneth Johnson. Also surviving are aunts Altha (Don) Offenburger, Dorothy Exley, uncles Alan (Carol) Lockridge and Dean Chappell; and numerous cousins.

Lucille Elizabeth Duckworth (Lucy), age 82 of Russell went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 12, 2014. She attended college at Omaha Bible Institute at Omaha, Nebraska. She married Duane George Duckworth on April 22, 1951 at Temple Baptist Church in Omaha, Nebraska.

With this union in marriage was born 5 girls, Mary Elizabeth, Teresa Ann, Vicki Lynn, Pamela Joy, and Kindra Marie.

Lucy worked at Lucas County Health Center for over 20 years. After she retired, she enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also attended Grace Baptist Church for 40 plus years. She attended Cornerstone Community Church with some of her daughters during the last 3 years of her life.

When Lucy wasn't working, her favorite past time was camping, boating, and just being with family and friends enjoying the outdoors, and playing Uno & Skipbo.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Duane; her mom & dad, Asa & Edith; an infant brother, James Donald; three brothers, Bob, Bruce & Bill; four sisters, Dora, Wyoma, Betty & Helen.

The day before Lucy's 82nd birthday, September 14th, she participated with her best friend, Marilyn, her girls, their husbands, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in a Walk to End Alzheimer's in Ottumwa, IA.

Gerald Kay Gwinn Obituary

Gerald Kay Gwinn was born February 11, 1946 to Johnnie and Leota Gwinn in Rural Lucas, IA He passed from this life October 2, 2014, at his home in Chariton, IA. Gerald was the ninth child of Johnnie and Leota Gwinn. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Rose Albright, and Betty Gwinn, and brothers Ray Gwinn, Jerry Gwinn and James Gwinn. Gerald is survived by his four children, Kenny of Russell, IA, Penny Shaw of Chariton, Darwin of Williamson, and Tony of Chariton, IA. Eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers, John Gwinn of Des Moines, IA, Lester Gwinn of Grand Junction, CO, David Gwinn of Chariton, IA, Roger Gwinn of Russell, IA, and one sister, Gwendolyn Bacon-Gist of Chariton, IA. Gerald attended and graduated from Chariton Community High School in 1964. Except for a short time living in California, he has resided in Chariton all his life. He worked as a self-employed truck driver most of his life and retired in 2008. He will be missed by many family members and friends.

  Services for Don Todd, 72, of Russell will be Monday, September 29, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Interment will follow at the Russell Cemetery.    Don Todd was born October 8, 1941 in New Sharon, Iowa to Cecil and Ethel (Paige) Todd. He grew up in Illinois and the family moved to Chariton when he was 13 years old. He graduated from Chariton High School in the class of 1960. Don worked 15 years at Firestone followed by 20 years as a private contractor for Hy-Vee. He also dealt in real estate. As a kid he set pins at the bowling alley and as a young man worked as a line cook in Des Moines. Don was a member of the Russell Volunteer Fire Department. He was always there to lend a helping hand for his friends and neighbors; and was generous of his time towards others. Don went on 11 mission trips around the world and loved to travel. He was always considerate and respectable towards others. He enjoyed playing cards and everyone will remember his love to ride. 

  Don passed away at his home surrounded by family on September 25, 2014 at the age of 72 years. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Todd. Surviving are his sons: Jerry (Carol) Todd and Ronnie (Anny) Todd; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; special friend, Mary Meinders; and siblings: Bob Todd, Rita Swiney, Gary Todd, Joyce Quiroz, Phyllis Todd, Bryan Todd, Richard Todd, and Sherri Collins. Along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Neva Pearl (Holder) Duer (98) went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 18, 2014. She was born to Pearl (Collver) Holder and George Thomas Holder, on October 29, 1915. She joined sisters Ethel and Edith. A couple of years later she got a little brother, Thomas Holder. Her mother died when Neva was only three. She remembers saying, “Mama sleeping”. Her Dad never remarried so with the help of his sisters raised four kids. Neva worked hard all her life. She only finished eighth grade. She did mention that she along with her sister Ethel got 100 on a spelling test and won a prize. As children they never had much. I remember her saying one year she got an ever sharp pencil for Christmas. She worked at the county farm for a time when she was growing up. She met Chester William Duer at an activity in either Chariton or Russell. They married on February 17, 1934. They had five children: Bill, Geneva,Tom, Nancy and Patty. Neva accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior one Saturday night when she went to church with her mother-in-law, Anna Head. Later, she and Bill were baptized by immersion at the First Baptist Church in Russell, Iowa, where she is still a member. Neva worked hard. In some papers found that she had written a short history of all the places she lived at were too many even for an accountant to keep track. In 1946, they bought a farm north of Melrose, Iowa. While living on the farm, part of her duties were to milk several cows twice a day, as well as during harvest time, shruck two loads of corn a day. She also had a huge garden, so canned a lot to provide food for the family. She worked for a while in Russell candling eggs. Later she worked at the Russell Sale Barn for thirty years as a cook. She made a lot of pies and homemade noodles there. She retired from there when she was 75. Besides working at the sale barn, she cleaned houses, wall papered for people and cared for her sister, Ethel, and her brother, Thomas, who both lived at Southgate Apartments in Chariton. One of her hobbies was making quilts. In the early years she would make patch work quilts by sewing pieces together and then tying them. The last several years she has used two full pieces of material, tied them and hemmed them. She did many for the church, missionaries, and for the last several years has made and donated over 1,000 such quilts to the Alpha Women’s Center in the Des Moines and Ankeny locations. She even did almost 120 since she moved to the care facility of which sixty have been kept for future generations. She lived on the farm for sixty-two years. Later she moved to Russell, Iowa to be near her church. Nearly three years ago she moved to Ankeny, Iowa to live with her daughter Patty until eight months ago when she moved to Trinity Center at Luther Park, Des Moines, Iowa, where she was able to finely rest on September 18, 2014, when she went home to heaven. Her last move and permanent home with her Savior! Neva had a great love for children. She would always light up when a little child would come to see her. Even the other day she had been sleeping when she was told that there was a little one to see her (one of her great-great granddaughters). She woke right away. Later that same week she didn’t realize that four of her great-great grandchildren had come to see her. Neva was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, her husband, and son-in-law, Lindell Bequette. She has left quite a legacy. Neva is survived by her children, Bill (Carol) Duer of Melrose, Iowa; Geneva Baquette of Monahans, Texas; Tom (Sally) Duer of Runnells, Iowa; Nancy Moore of Des Moines, Iowa; and Patty Duer of Ankeny, Iowa. She is also survived by her grandchildren Doug Duer, Linda Friestad, Lauri (Wrandy) Polo, Michelle (Todde) Folkerts, Kirk (Lori) Duer, Scott (Michelle) Duer, John (Julie) Duer, Betty (Pat) Howell, Tina (Bruce) Amos, Lisa (Tim) Croushorn, and her step-grandchildren Dennis (Pauline) Bequette and Christiana Bequette. As of the time of her home going, she has had 26 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren with one more (for now) on the way. Family has always been very important to Neva . She loves us all the same! Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church in Russell, Iowa.

Alberta Fay Ballard Poland Obituary

   Alberta Faye Poland passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2014 at 86 years of age. Alberta was born January 27, 1928 in Boulder, Colorado to Walter and Bertha (Hill) MoneySmith. 

   Alberta attended country schools in her early years and went to high school through the 10th grade. 

   On January 28, 1945, she married Howard McKinley. To this union, four children were born: Pat, Donna, Marlene, and Becky.    They lived near Russell at that time and raised purebred dogs for many years. Howard passed away, December 8, 1976. 

   Alberta moved to Chariton in 1979. On December 23, 1983, she married Doug Ballard. Doug passed away, March 6, 2001. 

   Gene Poland married Alberta on September 15, 2001. 

   Alberta worked as a Home Health Aide for the Lucas County Public Health many years in the Chariton area. She deeply loved her job and the opportunity to help others. One year, she received the Governor’s Award for home health care provider of the year. She also won ribbon awards for her homemade pies. She thoroughly enjoyed mowing the lawn and caring for her flower garden.    Alberta had a love for people, traveling, clouds,sunsets, and music. She cherished time spent with her large family, especially singing and dancing to “Rockin’ Robin. She was genuinely happy and liked to joke around even to the very end. She would always comment about the beautiful clouds, the sunsets, and the fall leaves. She would say, “I just painted those this morning”. Mom without exception had a love for hands. She would draw around everyone in the family’s hands. She would then make new ones as the children grew older.  About a month ago, her daughter, Donna and Lee put in a raised garden for Mom with her flowers and then painted the hand prints of her family on the planter. 

   Alberta is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Bertha (Hill) MoneySmith; her husbands, Howard McKinley and Doug Ballard; her brothers, Ancil (Marilyn) MoneySmith and Ivan (Verna) MoneySmith; and her sister, Carolyn (MoneySmith) Hansen. 

   She is survived by her husband, Gene Poland; her children, Pat Whitlatch and Mike of Knoxville, IA, Donna Miller and Lee of Conroe, TX, Marlene (Jerry) Edwards of Chariton, IA and Becky (Dave) McCollum of Chariton, IA; eleven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and one on the way; many nieces, nephews, Uncle Ray Hill, cousins, Linda (Floyd) Ware; and many friends and loved ones.

   Frederick Jerald Fenton, 88 years old was born to Earl and Exie Hammond Fenton in rural Lucas County near Russell, Iowa. Jerald was born in a heavy snowstorm, in those days the doctors came to the home.    Jerald attended Greenville Country School in Washington Township in southeast Lucas County and lived in a one mile radius area all his life. When the country schools reorganized, the Greenville school was moved into Russell for the Kindergarten classroom, his daughter Carol attended the first class to be held in Russell.     Jerald started farming at an early age, farming first with horses when helping his dad with the farming. He started raising Angus cattle at a young age and always enjoyed early spring when the first baby calves arrived. Jerald always looked forward to this time of year and even got his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to enjoy the new baby calves. 

   Later in life, Jerald bought the farm where he was born. Farming was a way of life for Jerald, once a farmer always a farmer. Jerald was a member of the Chariton River Baptist Church (Brushy) of Plano, Iowa. He accepted Christ and was baptized in 1940. 

    Jerald met the love of his life, Wanda Marie Sweeden and was married at the church by Rev. Leroy Sparks on October 13, 1945. To this union three loving children were born: Jerald Stephen, Connie Sue and Carol Ann. For a few years, Jerald and Wanda took their camper to Arizona for a few months in the winter and spent time visiting with family and friends. When summer came, they camped at the Iowa State Fair for over 35 years, having many overnight guests. Jerald’s first and foremost love was for his family, children and grandchildren. He was very proud of all his children, grandchildren and his great grandchildren. Jerald always loved seeing his great -grandchildren, they made him smile.  

   He was a man of few words, but you always knew what he meant or felt. He was always there to help, answer your questions or give you advice when needed. 

   Jerald was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dwight and sister-in-law Ethel Fenton, five brother-in-laws, Ernest, Ross, Lynn, Richard and Tony Sweeden and three nephews Bob and Larry Mullinix and Jerry Jones and nieces Sherry Peters and Billie Jo Zoch. 

   Left to cherish Jerald’s memory is his wife Wanda of almost 69 years, son Stephen (Michele) of Chariton, daughters: Connie (Rick) McKinley of Russell and Carol (Eric) Ziel of Boone. Grandchildren: Eric (Tawn) Fenton of Denver, Jason (Dia) Fenton of Urbandale, Heather (Mike) Kautz of Chariton, Susan (Alex) Oliver of Oakland, Erica (Brent) Conklin of Huntington Beach, California, Jennifer (Patrick) Graham of Ames. Great-Grandchildren: Morgan, Reece and Piper Conklin of Huntington Beach, California, Kellen Oliver of Oakland, and Cameron, Kaylee and Kendyl Kautz of Chariton. Sister-in-law’s Sue (Phil) Jones of Paw Paw, Michigan, Rosalie (Jim) Mullinix of Albia, Dorothy Sweeden of Arthur, and Ingna Sweeden of Odebolt, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Lowell went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 21, 2014. He was born to Pearl Boozell Sims and Harley Nelson Sims on October 16, 1929 in Russell, Iowa and graduated from Russell High School in 1948. He received a degree in Economics from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He was a proud veteran of the Korean War, serving overseas. Lowell married his high school sweetheart, Arlene Ellis, on July 8th, 1951 and they were blessed with 63 incredible years together. They had two children, Gary and Diana. Lowell was the Assistant Superintendent of the Burlington Northern Railroad (Ottumwa Division) and was transferred to several cities in the Midwest spending most of his working career in Ottumwa, Iowa. In 1983, after 30 years, they retired to Florida; however, he always considered Russell his home. He was an active member of the 1st Baptist Church in Florida and in Russell and enjoyed his church related activities. He loved the Lord, reading his bible and helping with bible study. Lowell had a personality that would spark up the room. He was a practical joker with a great sense of humor. He had a generous heart and a passion for living life to its fullest. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His fondest memories were his family trips to South Dakota, traveling on the Amtrak train with Arlene, exploring Florida and spending time on the farm. He looked forward to hunting morel mushrooms with his kids and grandkids, fishing, hunting, playing cards and driving his old tractors. Every project around the house was a scientific experiment requiring duct tape, used parts from old mowers, copper wire and W-D 40 to make it work. Many of the experimental projects are still in process. Lowell had his own sense of style. He was the master of finding things he didn’t need at garage sales and could never pass up bargains on the other things he didn’t need today, but might need tomorrow. Grandpa Lowell was adored by his grandkids. They looked forward to visiting him at the farm and in Florida. Every day was an adventure. He was a wonderful husband, a great father, an extra special grandpa and good friend to all. His love of family and friend will long be remembered. We will miss him greatly. Lowell was preceded in death by his son, Gary Sims, his grandson, Ryan Sims, his brothers, Hobart and Harold Sims, his sister Juanita Wells, and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; his daughter, Diana (Jim) Willits of Windsor Heights, Iowa; his daughter-in-law, Becky Sims of West Des Moines, Iowa; and his four grandchildren: Courtney Willits, Ashley Willits, Nick Sims and Zach Sims.

   Floyd Russell Dewitt, son of Lulu Inez Jewell Dewitt and William Arthur Dewitt, was born on December 30, 1924 in Albia, Iowa. He passed away on July 4, 2014 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 89 years old. He was the last living of his siblings who were LaVonne, Esther, Genevieve, Carl and Dale (Bobby). 

   He attended and graduated from Russell Community School. His favorite activity was basketball and his love of sports continued as an avid fan of the “Iowa Hawkeyes”. Floyd grew up on a farm and spent his entire working life on a farm north of Russell. He treasured all of his years on the farm where he harbored a deep love of the land and the animals in his care. He went from using a team of horses to his Allis Chalmers tractors. 

   Floyd remained a bachelor until the age of sixty when he was swept off his feet by Gloria Moore. They married on June 29, 1985. They just celebrated their 29th anniversary. The challenge of marrying a wife with six kids proved to be a source of great joy to him. He stepped into the role of father, grandfather, and even great-grandfather. His grandkids all share memories of learning to drive the tractor and being pulled around in the little red wagon. Then one day he made us get out and pull him in the little red wagon. They will remember building a haunted house in the basement and very many more childhood memories. 

   A very special part of his life was Trinity Lutheran Church where he and Gloria helped start the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church in Chariton, Iowa. His love of God was deep. Floyd lived a full happy life and we will miss him. 

   He leaves behind his wife, Gloria and the six kids, Diane (Chris) Nelson of Des Moines, IA, Donna (Earl Bell) Grgurich of Iconium, IA, Wayne Moore of Purdin, Missouri, Carl (Julie) Moore of Russell, IA, Dale Moore of Knoxville, IA, and Dee Moore of Des Moines, IA; his grandkids, Jason Nelson, Candi and John Davidson, Lindsay and Derek Gomez, Holly Grgurich, Grant Grgurich, Jeremy and Brooke Bellon, Amy and Conrad Elmore, Cody and Jeni Moore, Christin Person and Scottie; thirteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
